New Dawn Fades with The Whip Hand - An Interview


Um cruzamento em alta velocidade de Joy Division com My Bloody Valentine, assim poderia ser descrito a sonoridade do italianos do The Whip Hand, tal qual o Soviet Soviet, os caras fazem um pos punk agressivo pisando em terras shoegazers.

O debute Wavefold deste ano, é uma pedrada, guiado por uma cozinha marcada e pesada, com riffs altos e cortantes e o vocal desesperadamente caótico, o The Whip Hand acertou em cheio com seu mix de desespero e noise.

Coisa finíssima que mostra mais uma vez que o submundo italiano esta mais do efervescente.

Q. When The Whip Hand starts tell us about the history...
A: The band was formed by Tony Bruno and Gianni Ricchiuti in 2012. A few months later Francesco Adduce joined them and completed the lineup.

Q: Who are your influences?
A: Each of us has different influences: Tony listens to hardcore music, Gianni apprecciates 90's shoegaze/noise music and Francesco is influenced by 80's new-wave/dark/post-punk bands. This three different styles are concentrated in our music.

Q. Made a list of 5 albuns of all time…
A: These are just some of the albums of all time (for us and for our compositions):
- Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
- The Cure - Pornography
- My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
- Sonic Youth - Dirty
- Verdena - Il Suicidio del Samurai

Q. How do you fell playing live?
A: It's a combination of different feelings, both negative and positive such as elation, anxiety, sense of liberation.

Q. How do you describe The Whip Hand' s sounds?
A: Our sound in most cases encloses elements like ghostly riffs, noises, walls of sound and cold vocal melodies. We could define our sound strong, rude and dark (for the moment).


Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
A: Apart from "Wavefold", which was recorded in a professional studio in Florence, our other productions were recorded in a bedroom or in our rehearsal studio with friends and lo-fi technology.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
A: We like and recommended emergenging Italian bands like Starcontrol, Human Colonies, Dom the Sleaze, Leland Did It and similar Italian underground bands.

Q: Which bands you love to made a cover version?
A: We'd like to cover Bronski Beat's "Smalltown Boy" (in an our new-wave/sgoegaze version).

Q: What´s the plans for future....
A: we'd like to play a lot of gigs to promote "Wavefold" (10-tracks album) in Italy and abroad.
