Iceberg Alley with Slaap - An Interview

***** Interview with Slaap *****

Q. When did Slaap started, tell us about the history...
Yohann: We started around the end of 2011... Johannes and I had been playing LoFi-Sessions (paste-board-and-rice-shaker-drum-kit etc.) until he left Strasbourg around 2009 for some time. And in this mean time I met Laurent. When Johannes came back to live in Strasbourg in 2011 I was happy to tell him "Hey i know a great drummer, let's make a band !". Laurent and Johannes never met before playing together and it worked instantly. During the first session, we played firstfruits of our first songs "Elefant" and "Brainfuck". We only decided about our name one year later.

Q: Who are your influences?
That's a very difficult question and we're having a hard time answering it ... Les Thugs, Noir Désir, Sonic Youth, Slint, Motorpsycho, Beastie Boys... Mostly 90's indie stuff but definitely also older bands like The Velvet Underground, RL Burnside or Zappa.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
Yohann : Gun Club Fire of love - Wire Pink Flag - Can Ege Bamyasi - Velvet Underground The Velvet Underground & Nico - Noir Désir Des Visages Des Figures

Laurent : Sonic Youth Washing Machine - Slint Spiderland - Portishead Dummy - Cosmonauts Persona Non Grata - Cat power You Are Free

Johannes : Sonic Youth Sister - Helmet Born Annoying - Beastie Boys Check Your Head - ZZ Top Deguello - Frank Zappa Zoot Allures

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Yohann : Scared ... and curiously, at the end of the set, i feel frustrated because minutes fly like seconds !

Laurent : I enjoy ! I like to play and forget everything, just play with them.

Johannes : I feel positively stressed and love playing our songs.

Q. How do you describe Slaap sounds?
Minimal fuzzy/echo pop (minimal pop rhythm, fuzzy stoner bass and echo minimal guitar)

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
We recorded the 3 tracks of our last (and first) vinyl 7" live at home with a friend. Several beers, some pizzas, microphones and a good soundcard. Only during one afternoon. We knew well the songs, because we had played them many times live. That songs were mixed by an other friend. And the vinyl was producted by Close Up, a small DIY french label.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended ? Bands of our country : L'Arbre bizarre, Année zero, Low Budgie. A great california band we support for one gig : Froth (shoegaze Burger pop). And otherwise : Corners (Los Angeles lolipop! post-punk), Baston (french garage pop), Karies (post-punk from germany). And already famous : Traams, Disappears, Crystal Stilts, The Fresh and Onlys, The Intelligence, Suuns...

Q: Which bands would you love to make a cover version of ?
Wire, Les Thugs, The Cure, Kylie Minogue...

Q: What´s the plan for the future....
Plan for tomorrow ... Finish the mix of "Daisy" (our new single) and publish the clip of it. The clip is being shot, he should be out before the end of the year. It will be a funny clip.

Q: Any parting words?
My head is a washing machine.
