Halluzinationsrausch with Narcosatanicos - An Interview

***** Interview with Narcosatanicos *****

Q. When did Narcosatanicos started, tell us about the history...
Tobias Holmbeck (Guitar/Vocals): This group began essentially as a series of very messy and very loud jam sessions, mangling Brainbombs riffs and the like, mostly just for the sake of our own amusement. It gradually grew to be of more immediate interest to us after a while, as it came to include more people and a number of somewhat coherent 'songs' took shape.

Q: Who are your influences?
TH: Each of us draw on a number of fairly diverse sources of inspiration, I think... Some specific groups/performers/composers that could be considered influential in this regard could be The Stooges, Brainbombs, Suicide, Glen Branca, Swans, Can, Krzysztof Penderecki, The Lounge Lizards and Huun Huur Tuu, to name a few.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
TH: I don't think I can.

Q. How do you feel playing live?
TH: On a good night, I feel narcotized, absorbed. We strive to play something that feels intense and right to us, something that feels physical. Submergence in mass, volume and and dynamics and forgetting yourself is a cathartic experience, as I'm sure a vast number of diverse musicians would similarly attest.

Q. How do you describe Narcosatanicos' sound?
TH: Messy and abrasive. Loud. Raw.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
TH: We build on a set of ideas for a time, and when enough of them seem alive together, we record them in an old WWII bunker-turned-studio in southern Denmark. The process is grueling, in turns eased and exacerbated by substances and excess energy. We prefer to retain the immediacy of a song as much as possible, so 2-3 takes is typically the limit. Ours is a difficult sound to get right in the studio, so our approach differentiates somewhat from the live environment, although we still insist on recording collectively rather than piece by piece. Q. Which new bands do you recommend? TH: Not sure I know what constitutes “new” in this context, but from our Jutlandian home region I can recommend such diverse artists as Get your Gun, Ærkenbrand, Hahn Kult, Tempelnat, Lasse Krogh, Tongues, Fossils, Yung, Shiggajon, The Dove is Dead, Spökraket, Hunger, Morgan Square, Space Program, Headreel... I'm sure I'm forgetting many more.

Q: Which band would you love to make a cover version of?
TH: We are typically too wrapped up in our own ideas to plunder the works of other artists, but in the past we have performed versions of songs by Brainbombs and Suicide live... We recently played a lengthy variation on Timber Timbre's “The Three Sisters” in a Copenhagen church together with Simon & Andreas Westmark of Get your Gun, which I think worked quite well, so we may do that again.

Q: What´s the plan for the future...
TH: We have been working on our second full-length for a while now and are wrapping up the last stubborn bits of recording. Simultaneously we are finishing up writing our third release. We will be playing sporadic shows around Europe throughout spring and summer.

Q: Any parting words?
TH: Thank you for your interest in our work.
