Whitenoisesuperstar with 86 SaNDaLS - An Interview

***** Interview with 86 SaNDaLS *****

Q. When did 86 SaNDaLS started, tell us about the history...
1 - 8 6 S A N D A L S was born in the summer of 2013 after my previous shoegaze band split up. I Didn't want to give up making music, therefore, I started to play all the instruments and to record songs on my own.

Q: Who are your influences?
2 - My Influences are various but surely my bloody valentine, slowdive, loveliescrushing are the ones that led me to shoegaze. Futhermore, bands like Codeine, Smashing Pumpkins, Eric's Trip and Slint have helped me to refine my sound. Recently I have appreciated the vaporwave and hip hop, in particular i have found interesting the idea of working with samples to create something new. Oneohtrix Point Never e Flying Lotus are the two names which impressed me the most. Finally, I Like very much Ariel Pink's ability of always mixing different genres in a very personal way.

Q. Make a list of 5 albuns of all time…
3 - it's very diffuclt.
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Codeine - Frigid Stars
The Velvet Underground & Nico - The Velvet Underground & Nico
Brian Eno & David Byrne - My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts
Husker Du - Warehouse: Songs And Stories

Q. How do you feel playing live?
4 - With 8 6 S A N D A L S, I have never given a concert and for now I don't want to 'cause i would need a band at my service (Lol) but in Italy there are few people that play shoegaze and making a band from the ground up is practically impossible. Thus, my project is totally dedicated to record and to publish my works with the utopia of influencing the italian scene, always experimenting with something new.

Q. How do you describe 86 SaNDaLS sounds?
5 - My sound is like a spin cycle, everything is distorted, sometimes you can catch something while other times it's just noise. The spin cycle can slowly generate hard, light, acid, dreamy, frightening sounds. Everything is ready to explode.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
6 - Inspired by Do It Yourself I bought an external sound card and a microphone. Everything you can listen to so far has been recorded and mixed by me. The guitars and basses are recorded miking the amplifier, therefore the keyboards are linked directly to the sound card. The drum, except for the cases in which I "steal" it from others, is usually realized with a free software I have found on the internet.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
7 - Well, starting from the italian shoegaze scene i would surely advise: Rev Rev Rev, My Invisible Friend, Kimono Lights, Novanta, Leave The Planet. Other italian bands: Purple Got Me Slow Mo and A Safe Shelter.
Foreign bands: Barlow, Solstice, Ovlov, The Cherry Wave, Tony Molina.

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
8 - It's a good question, I'd like to make shoegaze cover of bands that are not shoegaze, like Washer by Slint or Time to Pretend by MGMT.

Q: What´s the plans for future....
9 - I want to finish my third EP which, as I explain in a previous question, will borrow from vaporwave and hip hop but conserving the shoegaze and new wave components. I think it will surprise you in both a positive and negative way.

Q: Any parting words?
Enjoy your gaze!
