Do You Realize with Kiss Me Sunset - An Interview

***** Interview with Kiss Me Sunset *****

Q. When did Kiss me Sunset started, tell us about the history…
We started to play as a trio in 2013. As we were composing and producing a lot of music in studio with computers in the previous years , we wanted to rediscover the happiness of playing our music instruments live together without too much thinking. We were jamming and improvised, trying to find a sound and a direction to follow. This led to the creation of Moonshine Bowling, our first EP. Recently for the live shows we introduced a bass player and a visual artist.

Q: Who are your influences?
We think that the most important influences are the one that don't correspond to your music style, as a band. This keep you out of being too standardized. So the more they are varied, the better is. Here is few of them :

David Bowie Caribou Bernard Herrmann Alice in Wonderland The Besnard Lakes Fela Kuti André Forcier / Au clair de la Lune H.R. Giger Battles Can

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
Serge Gainsbourg : Histoire de Melody Nelson
Pink Floyd : Dark side of the moon
John Coltrane : A love supreme
Beastie boys : ill communication
Mr.Bungle : disco volante

Q. How do you feel playing live?
It's really nice to have the direct energy and reaction of people right in front of us. It's a important part of beeing in a band. Recently, we introduced a VJ in our band. Each songs get is own color and is own visual theme.

Q. How do you describe Kiss me Sunset sounds?
Kiss me Sunset is a rock band, with psychedelic, shoegaze and krautrock music influences. Concretely, there's lot of repetitives bass lines, guitar effects pedals, you can hear guitar chords, vocal melodies or synths soundscapes floating over a massive drum and bass cutting groove. But we always try to use imagination and colour in our works, listen to the songs, asking ourselves what's going on. We try to get things simple, even if it's difficult at times.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
Our first EP, Moonshine Bowling, was totally self produced. We have composed, recorded and mixed the album by ourselves. We made it in our places, recording each parts and mixing them. However, the mastering was done by Ryan Morey at his studio, Greymarket Mastering.

Usually, we experiment a lot with the sound. This is an important part of the composition and the recording process. Even to the mixing stage, we continue to explore sounds, keyboards and effects, trying to get a different colour to each of the song. We think that recording music is another way to perform with different tools and possibilities, and we don't want to be restrictive in the process of producing our songs.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
Here are bands from Montréal we love Suuns, Technical Kidman, Kutsi Merki, Constellation Nightclub

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
Actually, we already did one. We made a cover version of the song Do You Realize?? by The Flaming Lips https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxoU5lzAazM. We like the way they rearrange and stage their cover songs in visual events. So, the idea was to pay tribute to that band by taking one of their song and get inspired by their covering song aesthetic. A lot of people were involved in that project, it was an opportunity to make an artistic happening with many friends and to blend arts disciplines. But if we had to make another cover version, maybe it could be a song by The Yardbirds.

Q: What´s the plans for future....
We work at present on new stuffs that might be interesting to release this year. We are not talking about doing a new album, but to do few singles released. Gigs begin to pop-up for us, which is really welcome as we really want to play more often.

Q: Any parting words?
Thanks for the interview! Our EP Moonshine Bowling is available on Bandcamp, hope you enjoy !!
