Ordinary Love with Blocma - An Interview

Maia Dietrich e Anton Ljungh formam o duo sueco Blocma.

Simplesmente majestoso.

***** Interview with Blocma *****

Q. When did Blocma started, tell us about the history…
Anton: Me and Maia met up last spring, doing the general "help another fellow musician at a gig att Fuzztival”, (creed to Star Horse and Follow The Sea). I mean, we could communicate to get the rehearsal through, but other then that we didn't know each other. Of course the gig set a spark to something... We acknowledged it later as an album thats summarizing the first year of a friendship. Cause I mean, it all really quick became something more than music. All these questions about reality and how things connect. How to explore each other through the process of music and find out that respect and trust build up real fast… I don’t know, maybe sounds dull or ordinary, but it made a great impression on me.

Maia: When I think about it I'm liking how fast everything went, we were saying yes to each others ideas and connected our creative minds on some other level. I seems to me Blocma wanted to come to life, and we just watered it and took care of it as a plant.

Q: Who are your influences?
Maia: Everything pop and everything goth. I mean, I was an emotional gothkid who fell in love with popculture, still obsessed with Ian Curtis of Joy Divisions lyrics, but when it comes to melody and performance, David Bowie, Lady Gaga, Elton John are what fires me up. When it comes to sounds, and mixing, Scott Walkers Bisch Bosh has made such an impact on me it should definitely be mentioned. And Björk, who gave me the courage to go out of line with my vocals and be fearlessly precise in lyrics.

Anton: Oh I must admit that I’ve got a lot of 60s pop in my earlier years. That only lasted util i found The Knifes first album and the track Kino. After that it all comes down to mankinds place in Space. I do love exitential questions...

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
The Knife-The Knife
CocoRosie - Tales of a GrassWidow
Scott Walker - Bisch Bosch
Placebo - Black Market Music
Björk - Post

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Maia: It is when we feel at home, in the right place doing what comes most natural for us. Playing live is giving so much of yourself, channeling into something else, that space that is so hard to get to. We don't allways, but when we do, we step into that space with whoever is there in that room and is up for the ride. We are all about live experiences, and as far from ”look at me I practiced real hard to be this good” as you could get. Stepping on any stage is humility, for a great gig, you have no pride left in you.

Q. How do you describe Blocma sounds?
Maia: Peaceful, but violent, electronic but organic. It is a exploration of opposites really, that is what I hear at least.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
We spent 4 month last summer, every week on Wednesday we made a song, recorded it with our cell. On Sunday we made the music video to publish on Instagram and Soundcloud. I think it should still be on Instagram under @blocma. I guess we both wanted to explore what would come out if we worked really quick. Now we've picked out 8 tracks for our album, recorded them again with the same settings but on seperate tracks. Made this sparkling video with all these beautiful lights. It all feels like the beginning of something…

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
Maia: Our friends, Follow the sea and Star Horse. Erik of Follow The Sea is a very talented songwriter, when it comes to lyrics he inspires me.

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
Maia: Atmosphere by Joy Division, and Hemoglobin by Placebo. I will happen sometime, definitely.

Q: What´s the plans for future....
Anton: Write and release and of course tour Europe. Take some time and explore what we can achieve in the producing part of our writing, or what do you say Maia?

Maia: Yes, go real deep into that forrest and really see what we can do, think bigger, but to be more specific, I’m looking forward to it.

Q: Any parting words?
Anton: Live long and prosper
