***** Interview with Faux Slang *****
A: Adam and Rick were in a band together. Ian went on tour with them. They talked about ideas on tour so when they got back and the old band wasn't really playing, they started a new band. They all knew Dan so they recruited him. Then he got bored and quit. Then they got good. Dan noticed and joined the band again. They played a bunch of shows and released a record. Occasionally people still mention it. Dan moved to California and opened a pizza shop. Rick got his Ph.D. in Psychology. Adam plays drums in A Sunny Day In Glasgow. Ian is graphic designer. They'll never break up, but don't really play anymore.
Q: Who are your influences?
A: Anyone who creates anything.
Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
A: I sort of cheated you on the last question so here are seven albums on which our band agrees.
These are also our biggest musical influences.
Stereolab – Emperor Tomato Ketchup
Spoon – Kill The Moonlight
The Beatles – Revolver
The Velvet Underground – The Velvet Underground & Nico
Guided By Voices – Alien Lanes
The Breeders – Last Splash
My Bloody Valentine – Loveless
Q. How do you feel playing live?
A: It's a lot of nervous excitement and then it's over too soon. You should try it sometime if you haven't already.
Q. How do you describe Faux Slang sounds?
A: Controlled chaos.
Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
A: We played songs in a basement and pointed a microphone at them. Eventually someone offered to put out our record. Then we asked Josh to do a better job, and he did.
Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
A: We have access to so much music nowadays. I recommend doing your own exploring, the results are more rewarding. Make friends, start your own band, inspire others, and the process repeats itself until the universe burns out. Music is forever.
Q: Which band would you love to make a cover version of?
At one point we were working on Stereolab – Motoroller Scaltron
I always thought we should cover The Clean – Whatever I Do Is Right
It sounds like a Faux Slang song to me, but I sent an email to the rest of the band and never got a response, so maybe I'm wrong.
Q: What are your plans for the future?
A: Take a shower, go to work, get stressed out, go home, have a drink; rinse, repeat. In-between we'll find time to get together and make music, but don't expect much. Maybe we'll finish the album we started 4 years ago. Here's a sample.
Q: Any parting words?
A: Fun is overrated—seek the longevity of enjoyment.
