Nostalgia for Infinity with Sound of Ceres - An Interview

***** Interview with Sound of Ceres *****

Q. When did Sound of Ceres start? Tell us about the history...
We've been making music as Candy Claws since around 2008, and in 2014 decided to explore a more electronic sound, as well as collaborate with members of the Apples in Stereo and the Drums. We felt these changes warranted a new name, and choose Sound of Ceres because Karen, who has become our lead singer, sang as the character Ceres the White Seal on the last Candy Claws album.

Q: Who are your influences?
Frank Comstock, Boards of Canada, Astrud Gilberto, Starflyer 59, Alastair Reynolds

Q. Make a list of 5 albuns of all time…
1 Frank Comstock - Music from Outer Space
2 Boards of Canada - Geogaddi
3 Starflyer 59 - Gold
4 The Avalanches - Since I Left You
5 Bob Thompson - The Sound of Speed

Q. How do you feel playing live?
We approach it as an art and sound installation, where we transform the space with moving projections synchronized to the music, moving between our silhouettes.

Q. How do you describe Sound of Ceres sounds?
We call it "dream pop", or "bossa nova in space."

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
Ryan first writes the chords and melodies using a keyboard, then starts adding all the other sounds one by one. Karen adds her vocals based on the existing melodies. Then we send a mostly-finished recording to our collaborators, who add their own parts, which Ryan then edits into a final mix.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
Mike Adams at his Honest Weight
Reptar
Breathers
Rose Quartz
Sunboy

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
Sugar Ray's "Someday"

Q: What are your plans for the future?
For now we'll keep recording music and touring with our dogs. We hope tour overseas a bit in the next couple years as well.

Q: Any parting words?
Thanks for listening!
