Fluidum with Manon Meurt - An Interview

Just for a Day with Anilore - An Interview

Delírios sonoros, viagens a lugares inexplorados, a candura e a sedução caminham lado a lado com momentos enérgicos e propositalmente caóticos.

***** Interview with Anilore *****

Q. When did Anilore starts, tell us about the history...
We started a very long time ago, and it’s a very long story . Dead Love’s Grave took a long time to make, mainly because we were learning how to record and produce ourselves at the same time. The process took years, but for us it was worth it. We’re hoping the next album won’t take nearly as long.

Q: Who are your influences?
The Cure, New Order, The Smiths, 80's/early 90's 4AD, Slowdive, Ride, MBV, Radio Dept., Ned Rifle.

Q. Made a list of 5 albums of all time…
1. New Order “Movement”
2. The Cure “Disintegration”
3. This Mortal Coil “It'll End in Tears”
4. Joy Division “Unknown Pleasures”
5. MBV “Isn't Anything”
6. Slowdive “Just for a Day”

Q. How do you feel playing live?
We just played our first live show in over 10 years. Show much preparation goes into a live show. I still have aches and bruises from carrying all that equipment. We love playing live, there’s so much less control than in the studio. The amplification, feedback, vibrations, adrenalin, the audience… it can be scary and vulnerable, but it can also be amazing if it all comes together.

Q. How do you describe Anilore´s sounds?
Slow, washed out, hazy, bittersweet.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
When writing for Dead Love’s Grave first began, Andy and I would meet at my studio once a week and lay down very rough ideas. Once we had sort of established a direction, we began writing separately and passing ideas back and forth. We would then build upon and gradually re-arrange the ideas. Making this album was a creative and technical learning process that took about 4 years. We got so used to working on it, it was hard to believe we had actually finished. My favorite part of making any Anilore song is hearing the vocals for the first time… the moment the idea finally becomes an “actual song.” My second favorite is when finding an unexpected sound that winds up inspiring an entire new song. “Red Nepenthe” happened this way. The most impressive moment was hearing “Leslie Street” for the first time. Andy had no experience with recording software. He bought Ableton Live, and within two weeks, had written and recorded the version of “Leslie Street” that appears on the album.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
Diamond Rings, The Fauns, Fathom 5, The Angelic Process (not really new), Pilots In The Sky and On The Sea, Endless Melancholy, …

Q: Which bands you love to made a cover version?
*Slowdive, New Order, The Smiths, Ride, Moose, Galaxy 500, Dream Academy, Bryan Ferry, Minecraft music...

Q: What´s the plans for future....
We’re all trying to improve our home studios and really working on the live show. We’ve been working in front of computers for so long, it’s a revelation being together in the same space again now that we’ve been rehearsing for live shows. It’s given us so many ideas for new songs. What a novel idea, coming up with songs by jamming together in the same space! Has anyone ever tried this before? We have so many ideas that we are currently working on. It feels like we have several albums of material. We’re almost finished with a new EP. (That’s breaking news btw.:))

Q: Any parting words?
Embrace differences; exalt commonality!

New Ideals with Blablarism - An Interview

Time Machine with Wozniak - An Interview

Simplesmente genial e essencial.

***** Interview with Wozniak *****

Q. When did Wozniak start, tell us about the history...
A. Wozniak started in late 2012. We got together without any particular agenda other than to make some loud noise. Wozniak are Sarah on guitar and vocals, John on drums, James on bass and Simon (me) on guitar.

Q: Who are your influences?
A. We've got quite a diverse range of influences. We all love loud guitars, but there's quite a range of different tastes in the bands, including Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, Warpaint, AC/DC, Bo Ningen, Queens of the Stone Age, Besnard Lakes, Sonic Youth, Interpol, the Cure, Hookworms, Mogwai - the list goes on! I think what gives Wozniak our sound is the combination of the all these different influences, and each person's different styles and tastes coming together.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…

Ooh, tough question! This is strictly my own list, and I can't speak for the rest of the band (plus, I'm sure this list would change next time you asked me). In no particular order:
'Loveless' by My Bloody Valentine,
'October Language' by Belong,
'Disintegration' by the Cure,
'F# A# ∞' by Godspeed You! Black Emperor,
and (a bit of a cheat) all the Slowdive EPs.

Q. How do you feel playing live?
A. Our live shows are usually described as loud and intense. We put a lot of thought into our sets, so that there is a dynamic, rather than just a list of songs played one after the other, and we feed off each other's energy, so that by the end of the gig we're usually pretty exhausted. Where we can we also use projections, and we usually set up our own strobe lights on stage, so that the visual element is quite stark. One thing I've realised recently is how important the crowd's response is - when the audience are into it, it feels much more intense and rewarding. When the crowd is a bit quieter it can feed back to the band, and sometimes that's reflected in the mood of the gig. Personally, I usually get so caught up in the momentum of the sound that I will end the gig throwing around my beloved Fender Jaguar. It's had a few bumps and scrapes...

Q. How do you describe Wozniak´s sound?
A. This is a tricky one. I still describe us as primarily shoegaze, in that we build up a wall of sound, with fuzzy chords and drones. We're largely instrumental, so there's definitely some post-rock in there, but it's more song-based like Mogwai, rather than long and movement-based like some like Explosions in the Sky, although we have plenty of noisy and abstract sounds within the songs. When we do use vocals they are hazy and buried low in the mix, so that's another shoegaze element. There are also psych and noise-rock elements - we have plenty of big, dirty riffs, often repeated throughout the song. We tend to have the bass quite prominent - not quite the lead instrument, but often the guitars concentrate on building up a wall of sound, with hypnotic and interweaving guitar lines, while much of the dynamics come from the bass and the drums. I think that's a pretty typical Wozniak approach!

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
A. We've recorded everything so far at the Depot in Edinburgh with Craig Ross, who plays in a band called Broken Records, who put out their early material on 4AD. We set up and record live with all four of us playing in the room at the same time. Before we start recording we make sure we've got a great drum sound - that's the bedrock of Wozniak. We usually run through a song several times before we get a version that we all like - not necessarily the perfect version, but the one with the best feel and energy. Once we've got that foundation, we then do some overdubs - there are usually quite a few guitar overdubs to create layers of sound, and I like to experiment with my pedalboard to get interesting noises. James will often add something to bring a new colour or texture to the song. On 'Kreuzberg' which is on our 'Pikes Peak' EP, he added some piano, and on our current single 'Five Star' he added some vintage synths.

Although all of our songs begin in the practice room and can all be played live by the four of us, we like to use the studio to add new elements and build up layers, whether through obvious things like overdubs and extra instruments or more subtle things in the way a song is produced. On 'El Maresme', for example, the lead song from 'Pikes Peak' there are several different vocal tracks layered on top of each other, with different effects on each, like vintage delays, to help create a fuzzy and woozy feel. Without giving away too many secrets, vintage tape delays feature a lot when we're in the studio!

Q. Which new bands do you recommended
A. Here are some excellent Scottish bands we have played with recently, all of whom are on the internet: We Came From The North, Book Group, Gigantic Leaves, Mad Nurse. Check them out!

Q: Which bands would you love to make a cover version of?
A. Well, funnily enough, a certain blog has just invited us to do a cover of a Ride song, so we're looking forward to that.

Q: What´s the plan for the future....
A. We've started recording our debut album, which will hopefully be ready in early summer 2015. We plan to put out a couple of singles ahead of that, and we've just released the first, 'Five Star', which is available as a pay-what-you-want download from www.wozniak.bandcamp.com. We're focussing on getting songs ready for the album, but we're also putting together some gigs. While we've played a lot in Scotland, we haven't yet been anywhere else, so we're heading to London at the end of February 2015, and we're organising a few other gigs around that time to make a mini tour. We're also planning to play some festivals during the summer of 2015. We're very open to offers, so if any promoters are interested, get in touch.

Q: Any parting words?
A. It's so vital that people continue to support new music. We're hugely grateful to all the blogs and radio stations who have given us coverage, and it's really helped us to make connections with people all across the world. I like to think that we're part of a network that not only benefits from this exposure, but also helps to give other bands exposure too. In some ways it's easier than ever for bands to get exposure through the internet, but people also need to help bands by going to see them live and buying merchandise. As well as doing Wozniak, we put on a lot of gigs via our promotion arm, Morningside Young Team (www.facebook.com/Morningside-Young-Team), and the difference it makes to bands to sell a couple of t-shirts and some records at a gig is huge - it can be the difference between a band being self-sufficient and being able to do more, or running out of money. It's great that there's a global community which continues to be interested in brilliant music, and we owe it to each other to keep on supporting it.

Are you Experienced? with The PseudoSurfers - An Interview

***** Interview with The PseudoSurfers *****

Q. When did The PseudoSurfers starts, tell us about the history...
The PseudoSurfers is a solo project of mine and it took form about 2010, it took 4 studios and almost one year to record a first self released 5-songs EP which was then available by the end of 2011. Subsequent years were spent in many other projects and thoughts but now a brand new EP is to be released in weeks on a label and hopefully touring is coming afterwards as I am more and more focusing on this project as my main one.

Q: Who are your influences?
As a musician my influences range from flemish polyphony to contemporary composers to post punk, including most of non mainstream jazz music and some fusion, the old rural blues etc. I also enjoy listening to Early/Golden Age Rap music recently and I've been listening for years to experimental/ambient techno and some drum and bass. I also do love and am very interested in authentic folk music from all countries and times.

Q. Made a list of 5 albuns of all time…
In rock and roll I'd say my list would include, cronologically
1) Beach Boys - Any collection of killer hits/Pet Sounds
2) Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are you Experienced?
3) Lou Reed - Metal Machine Music (never listened to it fully but it's stunning beauty nevertheless) 4) My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
5) Smashing Pumpkins - MCIS

Q. How do you feel playing live?
I am now finally planning some live shows for this project. I've played extensively live in the past with other projects and on my own. Playing gigs may be sometimes great, but I definetely prefer constructing sounds and sonic landscapes in the studio with no time and instrumentation limits.

Q. How do you describe The PseudoSurfers´ sounds?
I love working on sounds and I am very passionate about day by day improving my sound processing skills. I think timbre is a frontier which has not yet been totally explored and still may help music to take new paths.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
It's a totally randomic process. Sometimes it would take half an hour other times months to craft one tune. I usually imagine sounds altogether with the writing (or frequently I would write around a sound image) so there's no a writing/arranging moment than I'd choose the sounds and record then mix and master. Everything must come together so I usually do altogether the writing/arranging/recording/mixing of the song. Timbre and sound is so essential to the meaning of music which is a task I think cannot easily be delegated to another person. Sometimes I think of involving a mixing engineer as being a painter and let somebody else color the picture, it can't work. I can't think of writing/arranging/recording/mixing as separate moments/processes also because I do not have a band. Sequencers and programming samplers are my band. Usually the only thing that comes later is lyrics.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
In the past years I enjoyed Dirty Beaches, Liars (if they may be considered new), Boris, and David Lynch records. I would also recommend Bachi da Pietra, a very interesting italian band.

Q: Which bands you love to made a cover version?
I did some very weird covers and I keep them in my archive. One of my favourite is a very hypnotic version of an old Cure song.

Q: What´s the plans for future....
Plan is to speed up the release of new material and touring, lots to be done!

Q: Any parting words?
Thank you for your hospitality, hope to be able to tour to Brazil someday!

Love in a Void with Sally Dige - An Interview

Diva!!

***** Interview with Sally Dige *****

Q. When did you start to make music? tell us about the history…
A:I started making music when I was 15. I played in a band with my high school classmate Vanessa. We were very much into theatrics and art films and originally wanted the band to be part of a theatrical play. Later we got our mutual friend Robin to play drums and then started becoming more a band than an art project. We played together until around 2011. Around that time I was beginning to branch off into a solo project, which became Sally Dige. I wanted to do something more pop and make videos.

Q: Who are your influences?
A: Fad Gadget, Ronny, Joan Rivers, Devo

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
A: I am terrible with these things because I'm always changing my interest in music. Here are some faves at the top of my head:
Michael Jackson "Thriller"
Tears for Fears "The Hurting"
Devo "Freedom of Choice"
Fine Young Cannibals "The Raw & The Cooked"
Hard Corps "Metal + Flesh"

Q. How do you feel playing live?
A: I feel I have always been more of a studio artist than a live artist. I like the control I have when doing things in a studio than live, especially in the setting of a club, but its always my goal to try and improve my live act.

Q. How do you describe your sounds?
A: Sexy

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
A: It's a bit all over the place. Mainly because I try to work with someone when it comes to music since that's where I love collaborating the most. I think something like music breathes life when there is at least two people present and excitement bounces from multiple energies into music. So for that reason, my process often depends on who I work with. I sometimes write demos at home and will present it in rough form, to be worked on, or sometimes I go in with nothing and meet someone and make up stuff on the spot.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended
A: Cult Club (!!)

Q: Which bands would you love to make a cover version of?
A: "Boy is Gone" by Lyn and the Invaders

Q: What´s the plan for the future….
A: I have an album set for release spring 2015 with Night School Records. I also have more music videos coming around that time as well. I would like to venture into doing something more with a performance project that would integrate music. A combination of a concert and a play. I would also like to write music that would incorporate other styles into it.

Q: Any parting words?
A: Happy Holidays

Putrifiers with No Tropics - An Interview

***** Interview with No Tropics *****

Q. When did No Tropics start, tell us about the history...
The band started playing a few months ago this year, in our grey Normandy.

Valentin and John met each other by talking and sharing about music, it was all very simple. We figured out we had a lot in common so we told each other ‘Let's make a band !’

Shortly after this, Adrian joined up, especially to help us with the music but things made him stay with us to play drums, he already knew Valentin and Chloe before he met me.

The name of the band came up no longer after this by talking in a car, inspired by the nootropics, kind of drugs for creativity, cognitive enhancers etc.. and we liked the sound of the « tropics » word which tells a bit about our universe, surf (only music), sea, shells for example.

Chloe joined us at last to play the keys and sing, she also has a lot in common with us regarding music, and even makes some cool art pictures.

Q: Who are your influences?
We have a lot of influences, from the 60's until now, like surf, garage, new wave, indie, classic rock, lo-fi, folk stuff…

We try to listen to several different things, there's a lot of good things in every style of music, except zoukcore though..

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
eeeh not that simple, let's try :

− Either/or / Elliot Smith
− Oshin / Diiv
− Putrifiers II / Thee Oh sees
− Loveless / MBV
− Nevermind / Nirvana

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Well this is the beginning but, we already have a few experiences of it and we're looking for more ! I feel it like a very powerful thing, like being exposed and releasing pression and energy mixed in waves of sound. It's something special, there’s no other place like this i guess.

Q. How do you describe No Tropics´ sounds?
No tropics sounds are a mixture of our different influences and us as human beings, for the lyrics i write as it comes to me, i try to explore different states of feelings like duality, inner mess.. Otherwise, the reverb is very present in our sounds, especially for the lead guitar. The rythm guitar is usually more garage-oriented. The keyboard brings an original side, and the drums are dynamic. The overall production is a bit lo-fi…

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
That’s the same thing than a lot of modern bands, the Digital era is at least a good thing for that. It's just a do it yourself thing . We record where we practice at the106 studios, or in a living room at Valentin's home most of the time, For the EP we recorded everything and then Adrian is in charge of mixing and production.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended ?
Eagulls Toy Holograms Mars Water Mannequins Jaberwocky band

thee oh sees, not very new but it sucks blood !!

Q: Which bands would you love to make a cover version of?
Chris Isaak, Georges Brassens, Mars water

Q: What´s the plan for the future....
We plan to finish our set as soon as possible, to work on our records, the details can be important, and of course touring !!! recording a new EP, album, and a videoclip. We're open to many projects.

Q: Any parting words?
See you soon ! And everyone check our brand new EP of course !

Looooove!!!!

Cruel Summer with Velveteen - An Interview

***** Interview with Velveteen ******

Q. When did Velveteen starts, tell us about the history...
I guess the project started properly towards the end of 2012. Myself and Sam (guitarist) had both just left another band and had started working on some stripped down, surf-esque songs, which went on to make up the majority of the material on our first EP, Wasteland. A friend, James (drums), who'd also been in another London band, joined towards the end of that year. Inno (bass) has been with us for about a year, so it's been good to get a full line-up together and play some live shows.

Q: Who are your influences?
Really, between the 4 of us, it's too many to mention. Currently I'm listening to a lot of The Pastels.

Q. Made a list of 5 albuns of all time…
Again, that's a tough question! If we each named a big one it would be:

Nirvana's In Utero,
Echo and the Bunnymen's Heaven Up Here,
My Bloody Valentine's Isn't Anything
and
Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures.

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Personally, I only really like playing live when I'm happy with the way the songs are translating. If I'm not happy with how something's sounding live, it will really annoy me. I guess I am quite fastidious, in that regard. I don't think I'm a complete perfectionist, but maybe leaning that way. If I think it's all sounding great, then I'll have a great time playing live. The other guys, especially Sam and Inno, love playing live, so we have to come up with a happy medium sometimes.

Q. How do you describe Velveteen´s sounds?
I'm not sure we have one particular identity when it comes to our sound, and we're still evolving as a band. We appreciate stripped down, more direct music as well as creating something more immersive. We have lots of pedals, so we like messing around with those. We think that an emotive response is important in music, rather than making something that could be considered throwaway. Certainly, the next EP is what people would consider 'shoegaze', but we're not going to be staying in that environment the whole time, going forward.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
We record in a bedroom we've converted into a studio upstairs at one our houses. We usually start with James tracking the drums, bass next, then record the guitars through a Vox AC15 or Fender DeVille. We'll get a solid mix done and then the vocals will go on top. We'll mess around with the mix for a few days and then master through some analogue outboard. In terms of the actual songwriting, usually I will come up with a reasonably developed conception and then we'll all throw in our own ideas and make it work.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
We were fortunate enough to see Ought play, recently, and thought they were great. In terms of bands closer to home, Black Mekon (although they've been going a little while) and Girl Band.

Q: Which bands you love to made a cover version?
I don't think we'd do a cover. If I'm honest, for the most part, I find them pretty annoying. I mean, occasionally, you might come across a really good one; where a band has really made someone else's song their own, but seeing the amount of bands who cover a song pretty much just as it was originally done is pretty tiring. I don't really see the point in playing a song more or less as it was originally and then putting that on YouTube or something. In fact, it's annoying me just talking about it.

Q: What´s the plans for future....
We're currently working on an EP which we're aiming to release before Christmas. Our latest track, Entwined, is taken from that. After that's done, we have our sights set on doing a full-length album. Also, we'll be playing gigs again in the new year. Hopefully, we'll make a festival appearance or two.

After The Lights Go Out with The Flies - An Interview

***** Interview with The Flies *****

WHEN DID THE FLIES START? TELL US ABOUT THE HISTORY.
The Flies began when I began working with production team The Insects…I can’t remember exactly when that was but I guess it must have been around 2004. I had spent most of the 1990’s playing bass with Spiritualized and after that I’d been on bass and vocals with Lupine Howl as well as session work with Massive Attack and Elizabeth Fraser amongst others. The Insects had spent many years writing film and tv soundtracks but had also been involved with writing and production duties for Massive Attack.

Bob (Locke) and Tim (Norfolk), aka The Insects had a few ideas that had initially been written for soundtracks but never used and they felt they would work well with vocals. I began laying vocals on these tracks and it seemed to work well so we began to treat the work as a project to see where it went. Casually, over a couple of years we would meet up to write and record and eventually found that we had a fair amount of material…selections from this material became The Flies first LP, ‘All Too Human’ which we released in 2007.

Shortly after the release of All Too Human I began to work more with Andy Spaceland who was previously a core member of Alpha but has also worked with Butch Vig and Mark Stewart (The Pop Group). The Insects had a lot of soundtrack commitments to fulfil so were unable to devote as much time to The Flies so Andy and I began work on a bunch of stuff for a second LP.

Given that the music business doesn’t really pay anybody to make albums anymore, both Andy and I had to fit writing and recording in between stuff that actually pays. It took some time to get a collection of tracks together (with session work etc getting in the way) but eventually, with help from long time collaborator Damon Reece (Massive Attack, Spiritualized) on drums, we got there and completed the second LP, ‘Pleasure Yourself’. ‘Pleasure Yourself’ was released in September through our friends’ label Library Music Recordings.

WHO ARE YOUR INFLUENCES?
The Flies have a wide range of influences which manifest themselves in different ways over the two records we have released to date. The first LP was influenced a little more by 60’s girl groups and exotica than the 2nd record although those influences are found on the second record as well. The more orchestral sounds of Roy Orbison and Scott Walker amongst others probably play a bit more of a role on the second LP but, having said this, both records include elements which span the history of rock n roll from 50’s rockabilly and country through to electronica.

MAKE A LIST OF YOUR TOP 5 ALBUMS OF ALL TIME
O dear…this is difficult! I’m not a big maker of lists and find it very difficult to reduce all the music I know and own to a list of 5 favourites. Also albums are often not easily comparable between genres and when you go back to the 50’s and early 60’s the LP format was not the driving format that it later became so great acts like Roy Orbison and Little Richard lose out in ‘top ten album’ lists despite the fact that their overall catalogue is great. My mood also dictates what I think is great at any given time.

Having said all this I’ll have a stab at a top 5:

The Sex Pistols – ‘Never Mind The Bollocks’
Suicide – Suicide
The Psychedelic Sounds of The 13th Floor Elevators
The Beach Boys – Surf’s Up
The Gun Club – Fire Of Love

HOW DO YOU FEEL PLAYING LIVE?
We like playing live and have a great live band at the moment with Damon Reece (Massive Attack), Alex Lee (Goldfrapp) and Guy Fowler (The John E Vistic Experience) joining Andy and I on drums, guitar and bass respectively. We have surprised ourselves at how well we can re-create/translate the big orchestral sound of the LP in small clubs with very minimal facilities and production possibilities. Unfortunately, at least here in the UK, the fees you get for playing live are so low that they come nowhere near covering the costs of doing the gig which renders any extended UK live campaign impossible.

TELL US ABOUT THE PROCESS OF RECORDING THE SONGS
Our recording process varies according to what tracks we are working on but we do record everything at our facility in Bristol. The process is often spread over long periods of time simply because we have to make money to survive and this gets in the way of making The Flies records. Basically Andy and I will construct and record the basics of the songs and pretty much play all of the instruments. If the track requires a full drum kit, Damon Reece comes in and lays down live drum takes and often some percussion and we may get some string players in if we feel the track needs it (an we can afford it!). Essentially we write very simple songs and then fuck them up in various ways.

WHICH NEW BANDS DO YOU RECOMMEND?
Mmmm…sorry, I can’t think of any.

WHICH BANDS WOULD YOU LOVE TO COVER?
Strangely enough we actually have an EP of cover versions coming out soon featuring covers of Screamin Jay Hawkins, Elvis and The Carpenters. We are always thinking of tracks to cover but rarely get round to doing it. I’d quite like to have a go at ‘After The Lights Go Out’ by The Walker Brothers and I have also done a home demo of ‘A man Needs A Maid’ (Neil Young) which I’d like to flesh out at some point.

WHAT ARE THE PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?
As I said, we have an EP of cover versions ready to go which should be out early next year. We have a film of the band playing several tracks from the new LP live in our studio coming out too, a taster of which, ‘Into The Night’ has just been uploaded to you tube. We have plans for a vinyl release of our 1st LP and there are a couple of gigs in the early new year. We already have quite an amount of material for LP 3 and plan to add to this in the hope of having a new LP release to release in Autumn 2015.

PARTING WORDS
Thanks for the opportunity to get the word out in Italy and if any promoters out there want us to play out there we’d be right up for it. You can buy our current LP and back catalogue in various formats at www.librarymusicrecordings.com and visit www.thefliesmusic.com for information on the band and links to all our social network sites and our you tube channel.

A Kiss in a Dreamhouse with Femme Fantasm - An Interview

***** Interview with Femme Fantasm *****

Q. When Femme Fantasm starts, tell us the history.
I started recording music back in Spring 2014. I’ve been a visual artist for many years, but I was starting to hit a wall with my art. I was feeling very drained and unfulfilled, so I started experimenting with music. Eventually, I got lost in my own little world of music the same way I used to get lost in my visual art. I guess you can say that Femme Fantasm started out as a personal release for me; I didn’t have any real plans of releasing my music until recently.

Q. Who are your influences?
My influences run all over the map. For starters: Brian Wilson, Brian Eno, David Byrne, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Broadcast, and Stereolab. New Wave and Dark Wave music generally influence my style. Movies also inspire me very much, especially Kenneth Anger’s short films and early Terry Gilliam films.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time.
SMILE by Brian Wilson Beach Boys (including tracks that didn’t make the original album)
Here Come The Warm Jets by Brian Eno
Christiane F Soundtrack by David Bowie
HYPERBOREA by Tangerine Dream
AUTOBAHN by Kraftwerk

Q. How do you feel about playing live?
Since I only recently decided to release my music, I’ve only been focusing on doing that for a while until I build a bigger fan base. I have close friends of mine that would be joining me live, however we haven’t had much time to plan and jump into performing live just yet. I would like to, eventually, but right now I’m focusing on finishing an EP. I also have two singles coming out in the New Year on Beko Disques!

Q. How do you describe Femme Fantasm’s sounds?
The Femme Fantasm sound is a cluster of layered melodies on top of melodies, orchestrated as one whole sound-sphere with little peaks of familiar sounds pulsating in and out, giving your ears a taste of nostalgia and modern echo’s of sound. It’s driven by nostalgic feelings and thick beats, its moody, and dreamy at times and has some psych pop undertones.

Q. Tell us about the process of recording songs?
It varies, but the process usually starts with some experimentation on a synthesizer/keyboard. Sometimes I’ll spend hours experimenting with sounds before I even start creating a melody. Sometimes it’s the other way around. I’ll hit record and play something spontaneously and then layer and warp the sounds. I use Pro Tools software to record, but I make my own sounds and beats. When a song is close-to-finished, I get some production input from my fiancé and a few close friends, and then I put my final touches. I also do the mixing and mastering on my own.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of …Yuko Yuko, Lost Tapes, & Nathan Roche.

Q. Which bands you love to make a cover version?
There are so many songs I’d love to cover! A few that come to mind are “All I wanna do” by the Beach Boys, and “Talking Loud and Clear” by OMD.

Q. What are the plans for the future?
I would love to score a movie one of these days or short film, because film has an influence on my music. Sometimes I’ll play a visually striking movie and put it on “mute” while I record or come up with new ideas.

Q. Any parting words?
I just want to say THANK YOU to all the people who have been following me online, supporting my art & music, and encouraging me to keep going. I can’t wait to release more music for people to enjoy. I also want to thank Beko Disques for welcoming me into their family.

Dead Souls with The Doctors - An Interview

***** Interview with The Doctors dctrs *****

Q. When did The Doctors starts, tell us about the history...
We start three years ago. But we played in different bands before. As we are brothers, we play together for a long time. We were living in two different towns, and in 2011 we came in Bordeaux. A friend tell us he's got a good place to play music, so we start to play and experiment how to mix guitar and bass with loopers, samples and computer technology. We wanted to keep real rock energy and riffs on a linear drum beat and adding all we want in the songs. The only limit is that we have to play it live.

Q: Who are your influences?
There's toom many influences. In all the decade since the sixties. We can say, Joy Division, My bloody Valentine, Jefferson Airplane, Wire,The Smiths, The Clash …. Sorry, there's too many bands. But we really appreciate bands with a dark side in lot of kind of musics, pop punk, rock, new wave...

Q. Made a list of 5 albuns of all time…
« Revolver » The Beatles
« Loveless » My Bloody Valentine
« Figure 8 » Elliott Smith
« Closer » Joy Division
« Psychocandy » The Jesus and Mary Chain

Q. How do you fell playing live?
It's the best moment for us, that's the way our music sounds the best, with the power and the energy we need. A moment where you play your own musical vocabulary, share it with people. All is stronger when you play live.

Q. How do you describe The Doctors´ sounds?
We are mixing heavy rock bass and guitar with cold wave's loops, chords or sounds we built. We are really interested by riffs repetitions or loops in our songs. The result sounds dark and cold, with lot of rock energy.

The lyrics are very important too, the writing is based on surrealism collage, in french or in german.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
First, we play together, bass/guitar on a linear drum beat. When we got the structure of the song, we work on computer or on keyboard to add and melt the samples or loops. At the end, we can have three or four versions of the same song. We always choose what is the best for us to play live.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
Actually, we really like bands as Holograms, Metz, The Soft Moon, or in France, Jessica 93

Q: Which bands you love to made a cover version?
It's difficult to find only one, but maybe a really different band wich have a different universe from us. Maybe The Dandy Warhols played as speed as we do usually:)

Q: What´s the plans for future....
We're recording a new single this december, in the same studio that the lasts two EP in Bordeaux. And in 2015 a new album with a tour.

Q: Any parting words?
Thanks to you and maybe one day live in Brazil.

Dark Entries with Veil of Light - An Interview

***** Interview with Veil of Light *****

Q. When did Veil of Light start, tell us about the history...
I've created the band as a solo-project in late 2012, where I recorded the first songs which later became my debut release. All tracks were written, performed and recorded all alone in a bunker at the border of Zurich. The debut EP »Veil Of Light« was released by Swedish industrial wave label BELÄTEN in May 2013. The tape was characterised as »six songs of ice cold gothgaze splendor« and it sold out in less than two months. The follow-up »Cold Skin« was released in late November by Swiss label EDITION GRIS in form of a 7" single containing two songs, combined with two digital bonus tracks. My songs were also featured on various compilations for example on Let's Peter Out Compilation, the Scrap Mags TSM 0004 etc.

And finally my debut LP Ξ hit the streets in November...

Q: Who are your influences?
Of course classic cold wave and post-punk bands influenced me a lot, but on the other hand I also draw my inspiration from psychedelic bands and music as well as industrial and shoegaze.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
I can't give you a Top 5 since this is extremely hard to choose and is depending on the mood. But I do have several records I'd say changed my life but are not automatically my Top LPs of all time. Believe it or not, Wu-Tang Clans “Wu-Tang Forever” and Pink Floyds "Final Cut" had a huge impact on me when I was a kid. Later Cocteau Twins “Head Over Heels” and “Garlands”, Slowdives "Just For A Day", Brian Jonestown Massacre “Bravery, Noise and Repetition”, The Cure “Faith”, Einstürzende Neubauten "Haus der Lüge", The Chameleons “Script of the Bridge” and others came along…

Q. How do you feel playing live?
We love playing live! We try to make the coolest live show we can with being only two people. It's really important to us that the whole mood fits. That's why we always use lots of fog and have our own projector shows etc.
There are already a few gigs planned in 2015 including Freiburg Germany in January, a tour in Sweden in March, Holland in September and hopefully a lot of gigs everywhere else!

Q. How do you describe Veil of Light´ sound?
Depressing and cold but also dreamy and atmospheric.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
On the first two releases it's actually just me writing, playing and recording all the songs. On our latest LP ("Ξ") my friend Markus Weber contributed some guitars and synths to 2-3 tracks. In February 2014 he also joined me on stage in order to play live.

As for recording songs, I mostly write while recording. Which means when I start recording I normally don't have prewritten melodies. I just try to improvise and make songs spontaneously to capture the feeling and mood I'm in at the moment.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
Well, there are tons of great new bands! I love the spirit of all the new real(!) independent record labels nowadays. I really like my friend Samuels project S S S S who just released his Debut "Administration Of Fear" which is an extremely hard hitting dark industrial techno tape. He also did a Remix on my Single EP »Pale Eyes«. At the moment, I really dig the new Schonwald LP, the new Johann G. Winther Tape »Eating or vomiting it's tail«, Feuerbahn, Evje, new Youth Code EP etc.

Q: Which bands would you love to make a cover version of?
I always loved covers who are totally different than the original songs. Since years I think about covering »Suspicious Minds« by Elvis. I don't know why… It's so cheesy it hurts. I've never done a proper cover so I probably won't do one but who knows…

Q: What´s the plan for the future....
I'm already recording new songs and try to do an EP somewhere around summer, maybe a split. Then probably another LP.

Q: Any parting words?
Don't let your mamas drag you down!

Cemetry Gates with Modern Rivals - An Interview

***** Interview with Modern Rivals ******

Q. When did Modern Rivals starts, tell us about the history...
We started in St. Louis under a different name, and then three of us from that band moved to New York where we reformed and renamed ourselves. We released an EP, Sea Legs, in 2012, and have just released our first LP, Cemetery Dares, this year.

Q: Who are your influences?
We’re influenced by everything from other musicians to movies and books, to our family and friends, to our homes and our habits. Quick list – Hayao Miyazaki, Stephen King, FKA twigs, George Saunders, St. Vincent, Braids.

Q. Made a list of 5 albuns of all time…
Merriweather Post Pavilion, The White Album, Yeezus, Life’s Rich Pageant, Doolittle.

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Unshy and unworried – and on the best of nights, we feel as connected to the crowd as we do to each other.

Q. How do you describe Modern Rivals sounds?
It grows on you. We write songs in interesting time signatures with unexpected beats and unusual sonic textures, but after a few listens the effect is one of “what's going on?” combined with “I’ve never heard anything like this!” Or so we hope!

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
The songwriting and recording process is long – it starts with one or two of us writing the music and melody, then recording mock-up demos of that for everyone to learn, and then taking it to rehearsal for everyone to contribute or tinker with. Once we can play it in practice, the words are written for the melody, and then we take it to the studio. In the case of Cemetery Dares, we recorded all five musical parts at once in a room together to get a more live, immediate sound. Vocals and additional instruments were recorded afterwards.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
Mentioned briefly above, but definitely FKA twigs! She’s incredible.

Q: Which bands you love to made a cover version? I’ve often thought it would be fun to do a cover of a Francoise Hardy song, but none of us are great at French L And we have already covered a Snoop Dogg track for a compilation of Doggystyle covers – we did “Murder Was the Case.” I would also love to cover one of the many magical songs from the TV show Adventure Time!

Q: What´s the plans for future....
Going forward, we’re looking to write more songs and also get on the road for a tour that will culminate in us playing SXSW 2015. After that, we’d certainly like to release some more music, most likely an EP or maybe another LP if we have enough material. We’ll keep you posted!

Q: Any parting words?
Hope to see you in Brazil sometime! We’ll do our best to play a show there, but it might take us a while to drive.

Electric Mainline with Ayer Amarillo - An Interview

Peace, love and psych.

***** Interview with Ayer Amarillo ******

Q. When did Ayer Amarillo starts, tell us about the history...
Ayer Amarillo started around 4 years ago, in Mexico City. We got together because we wanted to jam a few songs. We had been part of previous bands, so we just wanted to get together to play!

Q: Who are your influences?
Bands that make guitars sound like everything except guitars: My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth, NEU!, Pavement

Q. Made a list of 5 albuns of all time…
Pavement - Slanted & Enchanted
NEU! - NEU!
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
Spiritualized - Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space

Q. How do you fell playing live?
We feel very comfortable and love to have endless jams that go over 15 minutes, that's the prime source of the songs that end up in the album

Q. How do you describe Ayer Amarillo sounds?
We think it's psychedelic pop, some tunes are heavy, others trippy, but all of them have a very strong psych vibe/influence

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
We recorded all the songs live, in a big room, looking at each other, no metronome or click, just feeling the vibe together. We then overdubbed voices and some synths, it was a very organic process, we really wanted the album to sound the way we do live.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
There's a band from Argentina called Escuela de Trance Buenos Aires that sounds great, we were heavily influenced by a Mexican band called Zurdok who released their seminal 1999 album Hombre Sintetizador and made us pick our guitars to try to do different things.

Q: Which bands you love to made a cover version?
We would love to cover Os Mutantes, My Bloody Valentine, The Beatles, Kurt Vile, so many great artists out there.

Q: What´s the plans for future....
Play all the live shows we can, and start creating the follow-up to Sueño Delta, perhaps playing live in Brazil

Q: Any parting words?
Listen to our album with an open mind and at a very loud volume.

Morningrise with Lowtide - An Interview

***** Interview with Lowtide *****

Q. When did Lowtide starts, tell us about the history...
Lowtide began as my solo project, Three Month Sunset. I started that in about 2003/4.

I was finding it too lonely so formed a band around a few songs that didn't work in a solo format. We went under that name until we found it was becoming its own entity, quite removed from its solo beginnings so changed the name to reflect that in 2010.

Q: Who are your influences?
As well as the fairly obvious influences, we all have a fairly diverse array of tastes that help shape the overall sound.

I really enjoy ambient drone and similar textured music such as classical, post chamber, black metal, etc, but also more upbeat genres such as bluegrass, indie/slacker/math rock.

Q. Made a list of 5 albuns of all time
Slint- Spiderland
Slowdive - Slowdive EP
Gabriel Fauré - Requiem
Blind Mr Jones - Stereo Musicale
Archers Of Loaf - Icky Mettle

Q. How do you fell playing live?
I generally really enjoy it. It’s always a challenge with a slightly more complicated setup with multiple amps, but having a regular sound person helps with consistency.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
With the EP and 7" we recorded live in our friend Jeremy Cole's front room. The album was a bit more involved. We spent a few days in Soundpark studio recording live takes with Gareth Parton. I then went and re-recorded all my guitar parts at home, deconstructing all my parts and recording melodies melodies and chords as single string takes. These were then taken to Gareth's studio and re-amped and the whole thing and then mixed it.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
There have been lots of new bands popping up in Melbourne lately. They're probably not new names to people with their fingers on the pulse but definitely worth mentioning.

Miniatures, Bloodhounds On My Trail and VHS Dream has finally started doing live shows which is exciting!

And from the sounds of things might have a release soon too! There's Hideous Towns and Mosaicz as well.

Q: Which bands you love to made a cover version?
We've done a few covers.

Slowdive's Avalyn, Field Mice's Letting Go, and even Huey Lewis and the News' Power Of Love (for a birthday party). We are currently playing Asylum Party's Julia.

We've also toyed with the idea of covering Don Henley's Boys Of Summer.

Q: What´s the plans for future....
We're just getting started writing new material so that the next album isn't another 4 year wait!

Polar Bears with Monte Terror - An Interview

***** Interview with Monte Terror *****
