Sister Ray with Acid Twin - An Interview

***** Interview with Acid Twin *****

Q. When did Acid Twin start, tell us about the history...
It started out as a way for me to sort out some personal problems I was dealing with. It wasn’t my intention to do anything with this project in the first place, just kind of happened. The sound and lyrics captured something from myself that I had not really noticed before. I was key to me to try to understand where these sounds came from and to let them guide me even further into some kind of weird mental thought structure. So without any direction I slowly when deeper into this project and got a lot of friends and had a lot of fun along the way. I get a bit melodramatic trying to explain stories like this. But it is more or less how this project started. Shure had a lot of detours since then and a lot of fucked up nights that I have a hard time remembering or am trying to forget.

Q: What are your influences?
All kinds of things that happens around me. Everything I feel about anything, I like to observe situations and take it in and build something based upon maybe one or more particular moments that I felt was interesting. What I end up using is another thing altogether. Unfortunately though I feed on negative energy and I think that’s where my main inspirations come from. When it gets too much for me I try to use it to my advantage in the process of creating a new sound or song. So that must be why many of my songs have that particular insisting melancholic feel.

Q. Make a list of 5 album’s of all time…
This one is really hard. I don’t think I just have five that I can define as the best of all time. It does depend on my mood really. But I can mention five that I really love at this moment.

Rien - There Can't Be Any Prediction Without Future
Acid Mothers Temple – La Novia
Bohren Und Der Club Of Gore – Sunset Mission
Coil – Time Machines
Terakaft – Akh Issudar

Q. How do you feel playing live?
It depends on what kind of mood I am in. Sometimes I feel trapped in some kind of mental prison, I somehow shut down and enter another mental state where I just have to finish what I am doing and then get on with it. But most of my concerts feels free and trouble less. The loudest and the noisiest concerts are the best and is where I feel most comfortable.

Q. How do you describe Acid Twin´s sound?
Fleeting, flowing and undecided. I really have a hard time to figure out what kind of music I want to write. So my albums vary considerably between all kinds of music genres. It is hard for me to describe it as one sound when all I have done in this project is so very different form song to song. Also I really don’t like to put my music in any box. And genres reminds me of some sort of box system that in my opinion only creates limitations in the process of creating something beautiful and original. The sound will then evolve from album to album, as my mood changes and as a natural cause of times shifting.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
Oh it varies very a lot. Some songs is have recorded at home though shitty microphones and some are recorded with analogue reel to reel machinery in our collective studio called CableHell. CableHell is a place that I share with likeminded musicians who help each other with our and somehow evolves together. Some material I write on an acoustic guitar and some are created based on a thought or through a jam. I love to jam and a lot of my music comes from those crazy evenings where people comes together and creates something beautiful. I’m learning a lot about working with analogue reel-to-reel tape recorders at this moment so for the future that’s probably the kind of gear I will be recording new songs on.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
From deep within the dark and dank woods.

ÆRKENBRANDT

Q: Which bands you love to make a cover version?
None at this moment. But I have done a cover version of a Psychic TV song called Papal Breakdance, as a part of a summer smoke session with another great band called Syringe. We had a great time with a bit of paranoia involved and I really think you can hear that in the sound and interplay between two very different bands. That cover is actually one of my favorite songs that I have contributed to make. I think that specially that cover give whole other take on what this song could sound like I none of us ever have heard the original.

Q: What´s the plans for future....
Recording of an album, looking at bright lights, having fun, drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes, having weird feelings as a cause of eating funny looking food, search for love, stay out late, come home late, try out new instruments I don’t know nothing about, eat more vegetables, eat less meat, make love in the nature, obsess about funny sounds, being lazy, getting fired, cleaning floors for a living, listing to cassette tapes while drinking cheap wine, play my guitar while I sing in a funny way, get tinnitus and cry for days, eat pie and then die. Something like that I think.

Q: Any parting words?
Yes. If possible, don’t waste your time doing things you don’t like to do.
And thank you very much for reading this interview.
