***** Interview with Deaf Radio *****
Greetings from Greece, let us introduce ourselves. We are Deaf Radio, a rock band from Athens. Despite a noisy, neighborhood-irritating beginning in a basement may sound as a cliché, still, that’s how things started for us. We jammed, rehearsed, and then found ourselves playing in several places across our country encountering strange scenes. However, it was only in 2015 that we started “Deaf Radio”, a project with very specific sonic identity and aesthetic approach.
Q: Who are your influences?
They say “good artists copy, great artists steal”, right? In that sense, mentioning our influences would be a confession that we copied and not… stole. We’d prefer that you say what our music brings to your mind, instead. Well, before judging, we’d recommend that you wait until our complete album is released, as today there is only a couple of songs available. But we’ll get to the LP later…
Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
Well it’s obviously gonna be a subjective list, mainly consisted of rock albums:
Doors’ (Debut),
Jimmy Hendrix - Electric Ladyland,
Sonic Youth – Daydream Nation,
Black Sabbath – Paranoid,
The White Stripes - Elephant
Q. How do you feel playing live?
Ecstatic, thrilled. Every single time we are on stage, our goal is to give everything we got, to exploit every way there is to excite the crowd and keep them engaged. Somehow the gig is a struggle to get people to understand your point, so we won’t care sweating our shirts or taking ridiculous expressions. Take a look on this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwULE7JsRi0
And when you walk off the stage, with your reservoir completely empty, hardly talking to anybody, then you know it went well.
Q. How do you describe Deaf Radio sounds?
Deaf Radio is a combination of dirty, fuzzy guitars, big drums, and easy to dig vocal lines accompanied by carefully chosen hook-up phrases and back vocals.
Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
To be honest, recording process doesn’t involve great innovations. We prefer to record bass and drums and sometimes rhythm guitars all together to get the necessary groove. Lead guitars and vocs come after. The voices, especially, are treated with much caution and every vocal line is analysed in detail. In the end there is always our playground-time - the recording of “ear candies”: percussion, back-vocs, whispers and breaths, whatever comes in our mind. That’s the part where we let ourselves free.
Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
You should know that there is a sonic... effervescence in Athens right now. There are many bands building a scene that didn’t exist in that extent in the past. We could mention The Noise Figures, Chickn, A Victim Of Society and many more. We are glad to be part of it.
Q: Which bands would you love to make a cover version of?
Kylie Minogue (oh yeah) or Johnny Cash may sound interesting with our loud guitars.
Q: What´s the plan for the future....
As mentioned above, we are preparing to record our first album. Basically, we’re eagerly anticipating the moment we’ll walk into the studio, as there are so many ideas, so much material waiting to come true. Besides, we are planning some gigs around our country before and after the recordings.
Q: Any parting words?
Thanks for your nice questions and celebrate yourselves. Cheers.
