Ecstasy and wine with Season of Strangers - An Interview

***** Interview with Season of Strangers *****

Q. When did Season of Strangers started, tell us about the history.
We started practicing in the fall of 2014, but Mandy and Lino had started working on songs the summer before that. Joel, Lino, and Samir had all played together in a retro-pop band called Bandolier. Lino and Jesse have played in bands together since there were 12 years old.

Q: Who are your influences?
Mandy-As far as musical influences, (of course) Skywave, A Place to Bury Strangers, Lesley Gore, Sleater-Kinney, Spinto Band, Smashing Pumpkins, Otis Redding... and since I am a multi media artist I get inspired from many different facets of life, my friends/family, languages, photographs, fairytales, silent films. The list could go on.

Lino: Dinosaur Jr., The Cure, Guided By Voices, Belle and Sebastian, Broken Social Scene, O.M.D.

Jesse: The Cure, MBV, Slowdive, Interpol, Sigur Ros, and Joy Division.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time.
Mandy: In no particular order and this is a super hard thing to narrow down...
Interpol-Turn on the Bright Lights
Smashing Pumpkins-Simease Dream
Oasis-What's the Story Morning Glory
Sleater Kinney-The Hot Rock
Slowdive-Souvlaki

Lino:
The Cure – Disintegration
De La Soul - Three Feet High and Rising
Dinosaur Jr. - Bug
Neil Young - After the Gold Rush
The Sundays - Reading, Writing and Arithmetic

Jesse: This one is very hard for me and my answer might change tomorrow. In no particular order...
The Cure - Faith,
Sigur Ros - Ágætis byrjun,
MBV - Loveless,
Interpol - TOTBL,
Slowdive - Just For A Day (Slouvaki may be the better album and is up there on my favorites but Just for A Day has special meaning to me.)
Honorable mention, MBV - Ecstasy and Wine.

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Mandy: Excitement and nervousness...I have terrible social anxiety

Lino: It's one of the best feelings in the world

Jesse: Nervous, excited, and elated.

Q. How do you describe Season of Strangers sounds?
Mandy: A dream of lust, love and loss wrapped in warm clouds while it's raining.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
We record all the basic tracks live to make sure we capture the energy and rawness of the song, so drums, bass, and guitars with all of us playing in the same room. I set up a couple room mics to pick up the the ambient noise. Then we overdub more guitar if necessary, the keyboard parts, and vocals last. Pretty simple. We try to stay true to our live sound. Also, we like to mix on our own or get trusted and talented friends to help mix.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended
Mandy: Alvvays, Teen Men, Ian (or eyyunn as their handle), Field Mouse

Lino: Them Are Us Too, Erik Blood, Soak

Jesse: Pinkshinyultrablast, Venera 4, and Westkust.

Q: Which bands would you love to make a cover version of?
So far we've done covers by The Cure and Leslie Gore.

Mandy: I would really like to cover Alvvays' “Marry Me Archie” and Smashing Pumpkins' “Beautiful”. Love those songs.

Q: What´s the plan for the future.
We're releasing some singles/videos and an EP this summer.

Q: Any parting words?
Mandy: This compilation is very exciting for me because I have known the dudes in Skywave for about 15 years. They were the first band that I took pictures of and that's how I got into taking band photos. Also Olie is the reason I got into shoegaze...late nights in the Skywave studio listening to MBV, JAMC, Slowdive...etc. I probably still have his copies of those Cds...oooops. They are stellar people!
