When We Were Great with Black Springs - An Interview

Diretamente da Austrália, pois é, novamente a Austrália desembarca nas páginas do TBTCI por conta do viciante debute do Black Springs, o nome da delicia é "When We Were Great".

***** Interview with Black Springs *****
Q: Who are your influences?
It's hard to say. We have always been into clean, dreamy guitar bands like Teenage Fanclub, the Church, Deerhunter. We still like that stuff, but we also channel some more DIY pop too.. bands like the Clean and Pavement.

Q. Make a list of 5 albuns of all time…
Beachwood Sparks - S/T
Neil Young - Zuma
Teenage Fanclub - Grand Prix
Love - Forever Changes
Stone Roses - S/T

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Great! We often have a slightly nervous energy, but in a good way. It gets us excited and after a short time we relax and just just have lots of fun on stage. Our live shows are usually more energetic and loose than our recordings. We smile and laugh a lot.

Q. How do you describe Black Springs sounds?
I always have difficulty with this question! We are a pop band first of all but we have a propensity for wig-outs and repetition. It is simple! There is a lot of focus on the guitars which are kinda, jangly and kinda fuzzy. Our bass player has more of a funk background so the bass lines are always very groovy. I would describe our vocals as "honest".

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
The album was recorded by ourselves and mixed by Caleb Jacobs (a.k.a. Plum). We have a practice space where we can settle in and take our time. We are all great friends and we enjoy any excuse just to hang out. We recorded all instruments live and overdubbed vocals and extra guitar and other little bits and pieces.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
In Sydney there are great slacker pop bands like Shrapnel, as well as deep psych like Dead Radio. Miners are really great too (they are friends however so I am bias). My favourite band of the last decade has been Sonny & the Sunsets. They are not new, but criminally underrated!

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
We always talk about doing covers but never get around to it! Teenage Fanclub, Television Personalities or Neil Young.

Q: What are your plans for the future?
We are releasing an album this week! Hopefully people like it and one day we can travel overseas to play to people. We don't seem to look ahead too far, perhaps we are a little lazy! We just want to make music that we like and hope people listen to it and enjoy it.

Q: Any parting words?
Be good to your mother.
