Glow with Flower Crown - An Interview

***** Interview with Flower Crown *****

Q. When did Flower Crown start? Tell us about the history...
A: I had just moved to Erie, PA with my other band Frame and Mantle and met Aaron through the local music scene and mutual friends. We quickly became good friends and starting hanging out all of the time and he even came on a bunch of tours with F&M. We had always talked about putting out some music but one day while drinking and watching a live stream of Coachella, we couldn’t believe nobody had ever started a band called Flower Crown. I guess could be taken as a little jab towards the Coachella crowd, but it’s all in good fun. It was shortly after that we started writing for our EP Hypnausea.

Q: Who are your influences?
A: When I started writing GLOW it was the Fall of 2016 and id been listening to DIIV’s catalog pretty hard along with King Krule’s “Six Feet Beneath The Moon”, and the Nothing album that had been released that year. I was also writing through my annual winter black metal period™ and even pulled some influence from Lantlos’ 2015 album “Melting Sun”. Writing continued through the next year as the new Real Estate, Slowdive, The Drums, and Beach Fossils albums came out and we were jamming those constantly. Aaron and I like similar music but I know he was super influenced by bands like Tame Impala, Cocteau Twins, Mac Demarco, and The Smiths.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
A: This is a hard question and I’m really bad at it whenever asked, so I’m just going to fire off the first 5 that come to mind I know I always go back to:

1. Sleep – Dopesmoker
2. Queen – A Night At The Opera
3. Nothing – Guilty of Everything
4. The Sword – Age of Winters
5. M83 – Hurry Up We’re Dreaming

(Bonus Round) Billy Joel – The Stranger

Q. How do you feel playing live?
A: Playing live with Flower Crown is so much fun. It’s a genre I’ve never played live before and, with playing such chilled out songs, it’s easy to get lost in them and really vibe out. It’s a sound that not only washes over us but the listener and we’ve had a great response so far. We recruited a few members of Frame and Mantle and a member of Erie, PA band Wave Trails and they’re all really great people and musicians so it was easy to get together and click immediately.

Q. How do you describe Flower Crown sounds?
A: Without throwing genre names out there I’d say its probably like eating acid at the beach. It’s pretty, its wavy, you may feel a little sick here and there, might be a little unsettling sometimes, but all in all hopefully it was a memorable experience.

(Don’t do drugs at the beach)

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
A: We did a lot of writing and recorded all of the instruments at my house in Pittsburgh, PA between 2016 and 2017 and then we finished everything else at Aarons in Warren, PA in the spring of 2017. I had been spent a good chunk of 2016 writing songs that I knew could fit on a Flower Crown record. We ended up with more songs than we needed and cut out a few that we felt didn’t fit in the track listing. We may remix and release those at some point.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
A: A band from the Michigan called Greet Death just put out an amazing album called Dixieland and I’ve been listening to that constantly. Our friends from Pittsburgh called Barlow just put out a killer record called “In a Strangers Car” and it seriously worth a listen if you’re into shoegaze/loud pop music. Wave Trails from Erie just released a great demo too. S/o to Pittsburgh bands Pinstripe Sunny and Zaki too. Awesome bands awesome people. p.s. The new Primitive Man is the heaviest thing on the planet.

Q: Which band would you love to make a cover version of?
A: I would love to do a wavy and nauseating cover of Future Islands’ song Seasons. Think it could translate well and would be a lot of fun.

Q: What are your plans for the future?
A: I’m currently writing a new LP with Frame and Mantle, but Flower Crown has a remix album in the works and possibly some shows.

Q: Any parting words?
Thank you so much for reaching out. I’m not super great with interviews but it’s been a pleasure and we’re always flattered when anyone enjoys our art.

GLOW is available on all streaming services and at our bandcamp and soundcloud.

Much love,

Richie
