Back On My Wall with Burnt Palms - An Interview

Assim é essa pequena preciosidade chamada Back On My Wall, disco viciantemente dilacerante. Escute alto, bem alto e saiu chutando tudo pela frente.

***** Interview with Burnt Palms *****

Q. When did Burnt Palms start? Tell us about the history…
Burnt Palms was formed when Clara and Riley found each other through a mutual friend, who knew we were both looking to play music with other people. It started off as just us two, Brian then joined us after coming across a poster we put up looking for a bass player. Our newest member, Joshua Vazquez is a good friend of ours who we invited to play on our new album.

Q: Who are your influences?
R: There are many, but to name a handful, I would say, Sloan, Built To Spill, Saves The Day, Mazzy Star, NOFX, Kurt Vile, Bessie Smith…

Q. Make a list of 5 albuns of all time…
R: Sloan - Twice Removed,
Hole – Live Through This,
Neil Young – Harvest,
The Breeders – Last Splash,
Saves The Day – Stay What You Are,
Burnt Palms – “? Back On My Wall (joke!!)

Q. How do you feel playing live?
R: I feel super happy, excited, alive, inspired and sometimes kind of nervous. It is one of the moments in life where I can really let go of everything else inside my head and feel free!

Q. How do you describe Burnt Palms sounds?
R: Energetic, fuzzy, melodic and emotional.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
The usual process for the creation of our songs starts with Riley coming up with the structure, guitar and lyrics, on her own time. What happens next is the most exciting part – Clara on drums and Brian on bass, come up with their parts at practice, as well as Josh with the second guitar. It’s always amazing to hear the song evolve to a dynamic final product. There are times when suggestions are made to each other, but for the most part, we do our own thing. For every album so far, we have recorded with Gary Olson (of The Ladybug Transistor). Our first, self - titled album was recorded in San Francisco, The Girl You Knew - in Brooklyn at Gary’s studio (Marlborough Farms) and the new one in San Francisco at Speak Easy studio (owned by Alicia Vanden Heuvel of The Aislers Set). Each one is recorded live in studio then we overdub some guitar parts and lastly - vocals.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
R: Hand Habits, A Certain Smile, Pony Time, Neighbors…

Q: Which band would you love to make a cover version of?
R: I don’t know… anything old I like to listen to…. maybe, “Deeper Than Beauty” by Sloan.

Q: What are your plans for the future?
R: Make more music, play more shows, meet and play with more great bands.

Q: Any parting words?
R: Thanks for the interview!
