***** Interview with Catalogue *****
Catalogue is born end of 2012... Just a idea to play together, to try something.with the collision of our three music worlds... Emma plays in an electro-punk band (Human Toys), Eric is bass player in a garage band (Elektrolux), Bruno was not involved in a specific band, playing some kind of noise at home. There were not really any plans, expectations, no real road map, guideline.. We have started and worked to build something together.
At the beginning, we have tried to play with a drum.. but finally, we did not succeed in finding a drumer who was aligned with us.. certainly also because we have a way of working together, finding a place in this configuration was not so easy ! So, as Emma is used to work with an electronic drum with her other band, we have tried to play with the computer drum.. and find that it gives us something interesting.. We have then decided to keep this configuration, to build a set for live. And we are still continuing to play like this ! Then, we have mostly worked to play live.. At first, in Marseille (FR), where we live.. And in France, Italy.. and last year in the US.
Q: Who are your influences?
Various sonic influences can be heard in Catalogue but mostly from punk, post punk, garage, pop and noise bands. Coming from 80's bands to 90's and now ! We have reallyso many references that it should be difficult to synthetize this…Let’s push some “major” ones like Wire, Sonic Youth, Bahaus, Talking Heads, Pil, Section 25, Fugazi, ,Blonde Readhead (early works), The Intelligence, Eddy current suppression ring, Total control, Girl Band….
Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
5 albums? We are not able to select 5 albums as we have so many important things to listen… 50 ?
Q. How do you feel playing live?
We love live ! We have spent most of our energy for live.. It is the way to confront our music to the reality! Playing live was the only goal we had at the beginning. We have a lot of fun performing, and we try to tour as much as we can. It's really a cool way for visiting countries and meeting other bands.
Q. How do you describe Catalogue sounds?
Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
The songs were really totally ready and plaid many time in live.. Only one have been finally droped after recorded...Emma works on the drums programming.. and then we have made most of the recording live for the bass and the guitars.. The voice has been recorded separately.. We have worked with a local sound engineer, who also has made our sound during several gigs...The mix has been quite long because we did not really know what we want.. So, many interactions, taking the time to listen, trying different things, with a very nice cooperation with Vincent Sermone (the engineer).. So patient !
Q. Which new bands do you recommended
There are a lot of very interesting bands in France now.. Very active independent scene, and also locally in Marseille..There are really a bunch of very good bands in France right now. The underground scene is huge, and although it's difficult to perform in the cities ( due to noise complain ) , an underground network including venues and festivals is doing a very good job We could really recommend local band like Conger!Conger!, or others like Pylone..More active like Frustration are now weel known...We also really love an english band we have plaid with, named "Total Victory".. Amazing !
Q: Which bands would you love to make a cover version of?
We thought we could do a cover, just to play a little bit longer for our very first gigs. A few songs popped in our minds : The Adolescents, kids of the Black Hole, Gang of Four, damaged goods, Kap Bambino, save. But in fact, we did not do it ! Still an option !
Q: What´s the plan for the future....
We just go to a tour in eastern europe (italia, slovenia, croatia, serbia, hungary, austria).. and will try to make aonther tour during the fall..We also work on new songs.. We just recorder 3 new ones in a demo mode... And we would spend time to compose new things...
Q: Any parting words?
Why not a tour in Brazil !!!! ???
Oh Yeah !
