Pendulum with Alter - An Interview

***** Interview with Alter *****

Q: When did Alter start? Tell us about the history...
-We got together in November of 2014. Austyn and Tyler were in this atmospheric black metal band called Barbelith in Baltimore at the time. Robbie had played in a screamo band called MNWA also in Baltimore. It was Winter in Baltimore so we all got together and jammed on some of the guitar material Austyn had. Tyler and Austyn already worked really well together from being in Barbelith together and collaborating on other creative projects. When we played with Robbie it was really natural and all of the songs just came together very organically. We recorded our first demo titled False Dawn in January of 2015 and then went on our first tour in June that year. We recorded our first LP Embers and re-recorded songs from our demo/False Dawn in October of 2015. A lot of things got post-ponned for us. We had a lot of set backs with Embers and the S/T. It all took way longer then we wanted. We toured and such but were still just waiting on the recordings and the records. Austyn had life changes and needed to move back to Louisiana. At that point we still hadn’t released Embers. We took all of the new material we had and recorded our most recent album Pendulum in August of 2016. Austyn moved back to Louisiana in September. We finally release Embers in November of 2016. We met up in February 2017 to do a tour for Embers with our buddies Eyelet whom Robbie drums for. Pendulum was finally released on 4/28/17.

Q: Who are your influences?
-We all have various different influences. We all come from playing in heavier bands but we are usually drawn to anything captivating and honest.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
-Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
-Black Sabbath - Masters of Reality
-Metallica - Kill ‘Em All
-Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly
-Electric Wizard - Dopethrone

Q. How do you feel playing live?
-Pretty euphoric. It all feels very meditative and natural.

Q. How do you describe Alters sound?
-Textural & introspective shoegazy / post-rock vibes, perfect for pre-dawn listenings.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
-We’ve recorded all of our songs live and do overdubs where they are necessary. We record vocals after the instrumentals are finished. So far we’ve recorded with our friends so we are always in a comfortable mode before recording.

-Solip, Ex Eye, Soft Kill

Q: Which band would you love to make a cover version of?
-Fleetwood Mac - Dreams

Q: What are your plans for the future?
-We are trying to find a time we can all tour this year in support of Pendulum. We plan on still writing music and putting out records and touring when we all can.

Q: Any parting words?
-It’s just a ride.
