Reverence with The Janitors - An Interview

Diretamente da Suécia para ensurdecer os tímpanos do mundo, The Janitors.

Simplesmente discípulos da obra prima chamada Psychocandy, os caras soltaram ano passado o espetacular e necessário Drone Head, algo como Taking Drugs To Make Music To Taking Drugs To da nova geracão.

E é o seguinte, não vou me estender aqui, leiam oucam, consumam, viciem-se, se é que ainda não estão assim o o grande The Janitors.

***** Interview with The Janitors *****

Q. When did The Janitors form? tell us your story….
The first incarnation of The Janitors saw the light of day back in 2004. Driven by the absence of noise in the stockholm scene, three Janitors with a mutual love for JAMC decided to start a band. for about a year and a half we delivered chaotic gigs and an EP before we split up. In 2009 a new incarnation of The Janitors surfaced and released “First Sign of delirium”. The current lineup, the third incarnation of The Janitors have been together for about one year and consist of Jonas; vocals and guitar, Henric - guitar and drone, Martin - bass, Jon - drums and Anders - percussion and organ.

Q: What are your influences?
Long cold harsh winters, Innis & Gunn, noisescapes, sleep deprivation, strobelights, strange sounds, cheap beer, pedals and the feeling of playing one chord a really, really long time,

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Nervous and really really intense. We try to stay on our toes… The current formation of The Janitors are now a lubed up trippy sonic fuckin massacre on stage. We really enjoy playing live. We are accompanied by visual magician Daniel Wiklund aka Hypnorama, who specially design our live visuals.

Q. How do you describe The Janitors' sounds?
Aquarius records tried to define us as fantastically druggy and tranced out, psychedelic spaced out heavy garage psych. That’s a long line of words but they kind of describes us pretty well.

We have a lot of different labels and witty descriptions : Evil Shoegaze boogie woogie and/or stökpsych. Swedish Lysergic fuzz wizardry, If Nick Cave decided to start a shoegaze band, I think it might sound a little like The Janitors ‘Death Song’”. it’s pretty dark basically.

Q: Tell us about the recording process....
We have our own setup in our studio in an old bomb shelter in the outskirts of Stockholm.

With the previous records Jonas and Henric would record every instrument by itself, now we have been able to buy a good mixer, sound card and microphones to be able to do more proper live recordings. In the new recordings we try to minimize the overdubs to more resemble our live sound. The equipment most re-occurring in the recording process would be the EHX freeze pedal + Boss DM-2 delay and an old Harmaphone fan organ that produce most of the drones, we used to have a crappy brazilian guitar called sonic that we use for fuzz parts. In the digital arena we are very fond of a couple of plug-ins we have, especially anything that has a punish button in there has The Janitors written all over it.

We are currently recording songs for the forthcoming albums coming this fall. We do all of the recording and producing and mixing ourselves.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
Not new but one of our favorite swedish bands: Audionom. They're a krautrock gone progressive swedish collective that coined the phrase The Sound of Wall. Amazing band.

Technicolor Poets, Hills, Then comes Silence, His Name is Codeine and many others. We devour everything from Cardinal Fuzz. Dave over there seems to have impeccable taste. And of course the other band that members are playing in: Black Belt, Nya Zeeland and Svart Katt.

Q: Which band and song would you like to cover?
We have done covers of Elvis, The Modern Lovers and the Mary Chain. Right now we haven’t got any lined up. What would you suggest?

Q: What are the plans for the future….
We will follow up Drone Head with a 12” EP on the Danish label Bad Afro Records and a full length album will be released by the mighty Cardinal Fuzz by the end of the year. So a lot of time will be spent in the studio going forward.

In between this we will probably release a lot of weird shit on our own digital Label - Your Ears Have Been Bad And Need To Be Punished Records. The label will also release the debut with STRSSMMNT and above mentioned Technicolor Poets along with distributing our friends over at PNKSLM Recordings (Black Mekon, Les Big Byrd, Sudakistan)

We will play the Copenhagen Psych Fest and Liverpool international festival of psychedelica and probably some hometown gigs.

Q: Any parting words?
Right now Europe is experiencing a wave of political forces attempting to normalize fear, oppression and exclusion of people of other cultures, skin tone, sexual preference and in many cases gender than their own. 2014 is election year in Sweden and we will take any opportunity we can to take a stand against the racist party in our own parliament.

This band believes in equal rights for everyone. If you are eligible to vote, please do so in favor of fairness and tolerance.
