Putrifiers with No Tropics - An Interview

***** Interview with No Tropics *****

Q. When did No Tropics start, tell us about the history...
The band started playing a few months ago this year, in our grey Normandy.

Valentin and John met each other by talking and sharing about music, it was all very simple. We figured out we had a lot in common so we told each other ‘Let's make a band !’

Shortly after this, Adrian joined up, especially to help us with the music but things made him stay with us to play drums, he already knew Valentin and Chloe before he met me.

The name of the band came up no longer after this by talking in a car, inspired by the nootropics, kind of drugs for creativity, cognitive enhancers etc.. and we liked the sound of the « tropics » word which tells a bit about our universe, surf (only music), sea, shells for example.

Chloe joined us at last to play the keys and sing, she also has a lot in common with us regarding music, and even makes some cool art pictures.

Q: Who are your influences?
We have a lot of influences, from the 60's until now, like surf, garage, new wave, indie, classic rock, lo-fi, folk stuff…

We try to listen to several different things, there's a lot of good things in every style of music, except zoukcore though..

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
eeeh not that simple, let's try :

− Either/or / Elliot Smith
− Oshin / Diiv
− Putrifiers II / Thee Oh sees
− Loveless / MBV
− Nevermind / Nirvana

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Well this is the beginning but, we already have a few experiences of it and we're looking for more ! I feel it like a very powerful thing, like being exposed and releasing pression and energy mixed in waves of sound. It's something special, there’s no other place like this i guess.

Q. How do you describe No Tropics´ sounds?
No tropics sounds are a mixture of our different influences and us as human beings, for the lyrics i write as it comes to me, i try to explore different states of feelings like duality, inner mess.. Otherwise, the reverb is very present in our sounds, especially for the lead guitar. The rythm guitar is usually more garage-oriented. The keyboard brings an original side, and the drums are dynamic. The overall production is a bit lo-fi…

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
That’s the same thing than a lot of modern bands, the Digital era is at least a good thing for that. It's just a do it yourself thing . We record where we practice at the106 studios, or in a living room at Valentin's home most of the time, For the EP we recorded everything and then Adrian is in charge of mixing and production.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended ?
Eagulls Toy Holograms Mars Water Mannequins Jaberwocky band

thee oh sees, not very new but it sucks blood !!

Q: Which bands would you love to make a cover version of?
Chris Isaak, Georges Brassens, Mars water

Q: What´s the plan for the future....
We plan to finish our set as soon as possible, to work on our records, the details can be important, and of course touring !!! recording a new EP, album, and a videoclip. We're open to many projects.

Q: Any parting words?
See you soon ! And everyone check our brand new EP of course !

Looooove!!!!
