Inner Sanctum with The Cosmic Dead - An Interview

***** Interview with The Cosmic Dead *****

Q. When did Cosmic Dead start? Tell us about the history.
Hello 'Blog that Celebrates Itself', this is Omar from Cosmic Dead.. for me The Cosmic Dead started when I walked into a bar next door to my house. This was the Halt bar, a wee stop off on Woodlands road in Glasgow, with a horseshoe shaped bar in one room and a cosy wee venue in the other. As I walked into the venue space I was immediately absorbed into a smog of drone and repetition which still shrouds my perception to this day. The absorbtion became so strong that I too became enveloped into the inner workings of the Dead, and here I am now, still ensnared.

Q: Who are your influences?
My personal influences are artists like Omar Khorshid & Robbie Basho, musicians who honed their craft and then used their skills to play a type of music that is a wholly unique blend of their musicianship and their origins. Music that isn't tailored to the vacuous circus of mainstream musical structure.

Q. Give us a list of albums you like.
In no particular order:
Steve Hillage - Fish Rising
Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Elliot Smith - Figure 8
Funkadelic - Maggot Brain
Coven - Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls
Captain Beyond - Captain Beyond
The Doors - LA Woman
Robbie Basho - Visions of the Country
Earth - Hex
Neu! - Neu!
Pink Floyd - Meddle
Rush - 2112
Sensational Alex Harvey Band - The Impossible Dream
Leonard Cohen - Songs of Leonard Cohen
Groundhogs - Crosscut Saw
King Crimson - Discipline

Q. How do you feel about playing live?
Playing live is an altogether uplifting experience where I simultaneously lose myself and discover myself whilst connecting with my bandmates and the audience in an indescribable though often fuzzy musical conversation.

Q. How do you describe Cosmic Dead´s sound?
Four guys, four instruments, ideas, repetition, improvisation, chaos, harmony.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
I think the environment plays a big part in our recording process, we've tried to record in as many settings as possible other than bonafide recording studio. We've been from the toilets of the Glasgow School of Art to the Highlands of Scotland and most recently the warmer climbs of northern Sardinia. I think environment really steers the way we play as a unit and our surroundings often find their way into the timbre of the recordings themselves.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
Pigs x 7, Blown Out, Kabobo, Girl Sweat, The Beatles
