Victorialand with Little Nova Sound - An Interview

Depois do tributo lancado no final do ano passado pelo TBTCI Rec. uma ode ao Cocteau Twins ressurgiu nos coracões, é notória a candura, a beleza contida na música dos magos escoceses, obviamente que Liz é um anjo em forma de mulher, sua belíssima e incomparável voz seduz e nos conduz a lugares jamais vistos ou pensados, é óbvio que ela é divina, mas Mr. Robin Guthrie é o mago criador das ambientacões e sonoridades que mapeiam os caminhos dos sonhos, e Mr. Guthrie é adorado e idolatrado por milhares e milhares de músicos, não músicos, enfim uma influência fortíssima e é exatamente nele que a obra do novíssimo Little Nova Sound se baseia, claro, acrescente Moose, a subestimada banda da primeira geracão da Scene, que ao contrário de Ride, Lush, Slowdive, sempre esteve em segundo ou até mesmo terceiro plano, mas o Little Nova Sound ou Gerry, o cara por trás dessa beleza imaginária resgate a beleza de suas influências, em músicas que nos guiam a territórios somente visitados pela música do Cocteau e do Slowdive.

***** Interview with Little Nova Sound *****

1. Q. When did Little Nova Sound starts, tell us about the history..

Little nova sound is the name of my small recording studio. It's just me (Gerry) a drum machine, my old Jazzmaster guitar and some effects pedals, that's the way it's always been. LNS is just a progression of my Influences, and learning to play this god damn guitar.

2. Q: Who are your influences?
Here in the UK around the 80's there was a music TV show called "the Tube" On a particular show One of the acts had to pull out for some reason, making way for another band to take the slot. When the replacement act walked out on stage I was gobsmacked! I had never heard such hauntingly and yet beautiful music before like this. This wonderful group was Cocteau twins. I remember being struck by some of the guitar tones that Robin Guthrie weaved like wow! I was hooked. Just last year I met Robin (and beard) at a valentines show in Manchester and may I say he was a true Gentleman. So I guess Robin has been my major influence. I am also influenced by Harold Budd I love what that man does with a piano, it just tares me apart. There also bands like Dif Juz, Slowdive, Moose, Annie Barker, Daniel Land, My bloody Valentine... the list goes on and on there are so many.

3. Q: Make a list of 5 albums of all time...
1 has got to be "Head over heels" cocteau twins: I just love It! this album made me pic up the guitar and "gaze" 2 "The Pearl" Harold budd & Brian Eno: Every time I am stressed this album creates a cocoon of bliss around me. 3 "Extractions" Dif Juz: What these four guys did with two guitars, drums and bass was beyond me, every track is just timeless (in the true meaning of the word) I just wish they were all still together... Both Richie Thomas and Gary Basil Bromley are still prominent but the two Curtis Brothers, David and Alan have vanished, I wish these guys would phone home... please. 4 "XYZ" Moose: Every track on this album is just wonderfully written, played, sung. a real Joy. 5 "Ignite the Seven Cannons" Felt the guitar work on this album is fucking wonderful! this band was around in the early days as I was learning to play guitar and every now and then I may hear a little Felt Riff in a guitar track I'm working on.

4. How do you feel playing live?
To be honest, It would be pretty difficult to produce the sound live, I think I would have to hire about 10 more guitarist and also, It's never really crossed my mind that much. If there was a way to do so in the future then... yeah but things would have to be scaled down a bit.
Maybe i'll buy a reel to reel tape machine and go old school.

5. Q. How do you describe Little Nova Sound sounds?
I guess they are to me like paints on a canvas that doesn't give away all of the picture right away, so when you return to a certain track again you'll hear something, or feel something completely different.
that question should be given to the listener and not me really, I'm a bit shit at trying to describe things I create.

6 Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
Well, I'm not the best guitarist on this planet and I wouldn't really want to be either, so I guess that I just mess about at first until something jumps out at me. It could be a guitar sound or effect or melody but As soon as I get something I work tirelessly to build on the melody.
I'll play the guitar with ebows and flip them in reverse and add different effects, multilayer the same guitar part with different reverbs, it is total freedom.
There is this weird point when writing music, it always feels like you are not in control and you get totally lost in it, I love the way creativity is endless and free of all boundaries., so the hours spent in the studio is "fun time" for me and also painful when things don't go to plan.
The drums are always fun to do, I have a couple of old drum machines that i occasionally have to kick start these days but mostly I'll use BFD2 and some free downloadable soft drums.
As you will notice from my soundcloud page there are some tracks like "Swathe" "Feathered Web" and "Skimming Stones" These tracks are my four track ambient pieces the process is very different to those written with drums. These are usually written recorded and produced in about four hours.
It is really difficult describing the recording process at times because not even I understand what the fuck I'm doing, I'm just being Creative... if that helps.

7. Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
Dråpe: oh I love this band sooo much! they are just dreamy, I could go on a bit about how much I love this band so I'll stop now.
Sea Oleena: Charlotte Oleena Oozes etherealness her album "Sea Oleena" is the most beautiful thing that I have heard in a long time.
Snowbird: featuring ex Cocteau bassist Simon Raymonde and the most ethereal vocals of Stephanie Dosen. I can't wait for their album to be released. I have heard a couple of tracks already and they are just bliss.

8. Q: Which bands you love to made a cover version?
I'm sorry to say, I hate covers... I just don't see the point in them I would rather create something new. I think covers are like some sort of talentless Karaoke machined monster trying to fuck it's way to stardom on the back of someone elses hard work.

9. Q: What´s the plans for future....
I would like to work over the interweb with a Female vocalist to add a new depth to the recordings Other than that, bang out a couple of new ep's. I am also in the process of putting video to some new material.

10. Q: Any parting words?

Interstellar Overdrive with New Candys - An Interview

Ainda em clima de psicodelia, agora chegou a vez do New Candys aterrizar nas páginas do TBTCI.

E não é que a Itália tem gerado espetacular expoentes do new psych?!?!? Vide Thee Piatcions por exemplo, o New Candys já tem um currículo invejável, os caras já chamara atencão de nada mais nada menos que Anton Newcombe, e são cultuados pelos iniciados e psychs ao redor do mundo, inclua aí o TBTCI

O último registro dos caras é o pegajoso Stars Reach the Abyss de 2012, mas não se preocupem porque logo logo tem novidade dos freaks.

Mas assim, se você não conhece o New Candys, já se prepare porque aqui é psicodelismo a flor da pele, pra viajar sem se mover....e o ticket da viagem é daquele jeito, só ida, a volta não é garantida não, mas nem esquente, vale cada segundo do trajeto.

Q. When did New Candys form? tell us your story…
We formed in 2008, after Dario (drummer) joined the band everything started to work and by june 2008 we played our first show. We had a break time because Fernando moved to London and got back in summer 2009. Soon after we recorded our first self-produced EP and we got attention from the "Italian underground rock scene". We made our first album in 2012, soon you'll hear the second one.

Q: What are your influences?
Velvet Underground, Syd's Pink Floyd, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Warlocks, Raveonettes, Dandy Warhols, Crystal Stilts, and many others… I can tell you we are not influenced by Duran Duran like bands and 80s music in general. We don't like Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Queen, they scream too much and don't look cool.

Q. How do you feel playing live?
We feel good, but honestly playing live isn't the most exciting moment for us. We prefer the writing process because it's more creative. There are too many factors that could influence a live show, the sound outside the stage, inside the stage, the lights, the place, the people, and we can't control everything, so every live show is different, sometimes it's fantastic, sometimes it's ok.

Q. How do you describe New Candys' sounds?
Dark rock'n'roll with high psychedelic tendencies.

Q: Tell us about the recording process.
It's the most creative moment after the writing process, because you listen to the song with more accuracy and you can play more with sounds, take care of details.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
In the last year we started listening to The Growlers and Singapore Sling more than others. We shared the stage with some great Italian bands like Mother Island, Gli Sportivi, Supertempo, Brothers In Law, Hot Gossip, Zabrisky and many others.

Q: Which band and song would you like to cover?

Q: What are the plans for the future….
Putting out the album we recorded last year, make an European tour.

***** Interview with Jesus on Heroin *****

1. When did Jesus on Heroine start, tell us about the history... 

Well, the project began around 2011. Back then, the whole thing evolved around two friends listening to psychedelic musk .They wrote some tunes - recorded the songs - and released them under the name Jesus on Heroine.

2. Who are your influences? 

We could mention a lot of bands, from The Doors over My Bloody Valentine and The Jesus and Mary Chain, to more contemporary artists, such as The Black Angels, Kasabian and The Brian Jonestown Massacre, but when we get to the bottom of everything, it is pretty hard to say exactly who or what we get influenced by.

3. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
Following the last question, it would be, “Give it back!" by Brian Jonestown massacre, “Passover” by The Black Angels, “West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum” by Kasabian, “Broken side of time: by alberta cross: ”, and of course “loveless" by MBV ” but not necessarily in that order

4. How do you fell playing live?
Well, hard to explain, but pretty good, no doubt about that

5. How do you describe Jesus on Heroine sounds?
Well, first of all it should be up to people who listens to the music to describe our sound, but its definitely not directed at the charts or radios. Its slow and hopefully mind-expanding - perhaps some kind of clash between dreamy psychedelia, noise-rock and drone-based shoegaze.

6. Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
We recorded the album in our drummers former girlfriends apartment. We do all recordings and mixing ourselves, so the whole process is kind of minimalistic.

7. Which new bands do you recommended? There is a pretty interesting scene evolving in Denmark right now, with bands such as Sandy Blue, Casper Blanca,, The Wands and The Woken Trees, but there is also a reason to watch out for foreign bands such as francois sky, Black Market Karma and Deep Space – bands we are playing with at this year’s Berlin Psych Fest.

8. Which bands you love to made a cover version?
We don’t really do cover-songs, but if we had to, maybe The Black Angels or madonna.

9. What´s the plans for future:
The plans for the future is to play some psychedelic festivals this spring and summer and to work on our second album. We don't know how long it is going to be or how many songs it going to contain, but it is certain that going to be inspired by a country/acoustic vibe…

10. Any parting words?
Yeah, we’re glad that our music made it all the way to Brazil, and thanks for sharing..

Black Planet with Candy Colors - An Interview

Cold wave, com roupagem atual é mais do que comum atualmente, mas poucos são os que realmente fogem do clichê e demonstram maturidade o suficiente para não se sufocarem pelos seus ídolos.

É bem o caso co Candy Colors, mexicanos densos que inconscientemente talvez caminham livremente pelos gélidos sons da cold wave, jogam Sisters of Mercy no caldeirão, lembram o Interpol quando estes eram bons, e criaram um grande album intitulado Casus Belli que veio ao mundo em agosto de ano passado e passou despercebido por todo mundo, mas o TBTCI pega e puxa a pérola do limbo e traz um pouco de luz a escuridão do Candy Colors. Escute Alive e perceba o que estou dizendo, não a toa o Candy Colors lembra um esquecido underground alemão lá dos longínquos 80´s.

Fiquem de olhos abertos para os próximos passos dos caras, simplesmente porque não é todo dia que um album como Casus Belli é concebido dessa forma.

Q. When did Candy Colors starts, tell us about the history...
1.- Candy Colors started back in 2009, it was originally conformed by Juan Loredo (our singer), Hermann Stoever (our bassist, who originally played synthesizers), Daniel Caudillo (Guitar) and Hugo De León (our original drummer). The project started out more electronic-focused "party music" inspired all those little New Rave bands emerging throught the web. Later on I stepped on the scene as the other guitar player (my name is Diego Barrera) and from then we started experimenting with other sounds, dancy stuff without the need of synths, which kinda worked for us for a while untill we noticed that making dance music just for the fuck of it was not really our cup of tea, the flavor of emptiness in our music was getting old fast. We hung out with Oscar Preciado who was playing keyboards for another local band, we liked the guy so we decided to integrate him to the mix and with his aid and knowledge we were able to write deeper music, still simplistic, still "dancy", but with this new addition filling up the room with all these background notes and other twists that gave us another chance to start again. Hugo decided that the band was no longer in his interests and parted and we called our buddy Ivo Gonzalez who has filled the drummer's spot ever since, our sinister six sound.

Q: Who are your influences?
2.- Everyone of us is a completely different case. We share common influences, but as for making music we all come from different places. Some of us are into pop music, math rock, folk music, a bit of metal, a hint of punk rock and a shitload of synth-based stuff and, personally, the "dark side" of the eighties influences me a lot.

Q. Made a list of 5 albuns of all time…
3.- A list of the 5 best records of all time. Shit, can't really say that I'm a qualified judge to pick the best 5, but I can list my favorite ones, in no specific order: The Sisters Of Mercy - Floodland, The Smiths - The Queen is Dead, The xx - xx, Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion, WU LYF - Go Tell Fire To The Mountain... I mean, the list could go on, and I would eventually add more that I'd forget, but these are the first that pop to mind.

Q. How do you fell playing alive?
4.- Playing alive? Well, most of the times, if not all of them, we play alive, I think it's better then playing dead since you wouldn't be able to play shit. If you mean the song "Alive"... for me it's a thrill every time, it's a very personal song for me and I live it every single time that we play it live.

Q. How do you describe Candy Colors sounds?
5.- Happy/Sad would be the definition for this album (Casus Belli). We hope to explore other sides of music in future releases.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
6.- Not everything about record the album is exciting. It's exhausting to some point. For this last album I remember leaving the studio at 4 AM with only 2 or 3 song ALMOST finished, I'm not saying that it's not fun, but we like to pay attention in details that pushes us back a lot compared to other indie acts. Another interesting thing about it is that the lyrics for most of the songs were not written until the day that they were recorded. I listened to the words as part of some of the songs until the record was completed. Now, building up a song is the most interesting and funnest thing to do.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
7.- Mexico has a lot to offer these days, even in our hometown. Bands like Ladymen, Hexagrams, Blackpony are some examples.

Q: Which bands you love to made a cover version?
8.- We always talk about covering something and never do it for god knows what reasons. There's always some talk of covering something from Morrissey or The Smiths, The Cars... your typical new band covering a famous song from the 80's cliche-thing going on here too.

Q: What´s the plans for future....
9.- Keep on making sweet music as long as the dark lord allows us.

Q: Any parting words?

Over and Over with Ceremony - An Interview

Em 07/03/2010, o TBTCI publicava uma histórica entrevista com John Fedowitz e Paul Baker e o grandioso Ceremony.

De lá pra cá os caras lancaram um dos melhores albuns dos últimos tempos, o Rocket Fire, e o culto à família Skywave, leia-se Ceremony e APTBS cresceu monstruosamente ao redor dos quatro cantos do mundo, o que é nada mais justo e correto por parte do universo, uma vez que o Skywave e os dois rebentos foram os responsáveis pelo resgaste da nova música alternativa e underground dos dias de hoje, veja, se hoje temos centenas e centenas de bandas geniais por aí, muito se deve a Skywave/Ceremony/APTBS.

Agora, Jhn Fedowitz volta com In Distance, que segue a linhagem dos grandes albuns do Ceremony, os dois primeiros, que diga-se são raríssimos e que foram relancados em vinil duplo ano passado e o grande já citado Rocket Fire. In Distance é barulhento, amoroso, sedutor, perigoso, como uma obra prima deve ser.

E pela segunda vez este que vos escreve tem a honra máxima de trocar uma idéia com o mestre John Fedowitz sobre detalhes do album, diferencas entre os discos e Brasil!!!

***** Interview with Ceremony *****

What is the main difference between rocket fire and distance?
There are three differences between "rocket fire" and "distance". First, I didn't use a drum computer on "distance". It's all live drums and I don't why I got away from that for so long. Second, when "rocket fire" was being recorded we knew we were writing an album that had to be played at full volume with sex drugs and rock and roll !!! The louder the better is what we were going for. On "distance" I wanted the songs to speak for themselves. You can listen to it at any volume and it still sounds great to me! Third, I'm working by myself now. I made every decision on "distance" , how to record it, what songs will appear on the album, art work. It was a pretty cool feeling.

How was the process of recording the new album?
It's different with almost every song... Recording the drums I would place the mics different in every song. I put a drum trigger on the bass drum on two songs. On the song "On Holiday" I used just one mic to record the drums. Recording the vocals, guitars and bass I only used a SM57 mic. In my tiny basement it's pretty easy to get a cool sound with a little reverb. The songs that Paul, Chris and Ben played on took much longer to finish, maybe because I had to get everyone together and focus. But at the same time I was recording new songs without them, recording every part and having a song almost finished in one night.

About the new generation, which ones do you like?
I'm not sure with this question. I'm thinking it's about how things are changing. Yeah I had MTV when I was growing up and loved watching 120min. and finding new bands to buy on tape and trading mix tapes with friends and hearing so much music. Record stores were still on every block and things made sense. The new generation is kinda weird with all original music only being heard on the Internet. I don't like when I find out about a band that is really cool and hear that it came out 3 years ago. I guess I'm bad at looking and searching for bands. Do I sound like an old man right now? Ha! I am glad for the world wild web! I think ceremony would have never been heard outside of the USA without it. It gives a band a chance to be heard without selling their soul to a label that never gives anything back. Now to answer your question. "The New Generation" sounds like a cool band name. But I'm not sure witch song I like best. I'll check them out.

Year before last, a place to bury strangers played in Brazil and was really insane, have you had proposed to play here? Would like to make a tour through Brazil?
I'm so into playing live! But I don't have the resources to get that south into Brazil. It's crazy how many fans ceremony has, and I would love to reach them all. I'm hoping with this new album I'll get more press and more hype to find myself down to you in the next year. I would love that!

What are your plans for 2014?
I have an EP coming out in spring called "birds" on a german label called Emerald and Doreen. Also my management is planning a tour off the east coast into the mid-west of the US. And I'm always recording new music.. I have a good feeling for 2014.

Seventeen Seconds with People of Nothing - An Interview

Cold wave, post punk, shoegazer, CºLD pra ser mais específico.

Florian Chombart é o responsável pela devastacão francesa chamada People of Nothing. Ep matador de novembro do ano passado que atende pela alcunha de A Break to Cry, demonstra o poderio sonoro de Florian algo como um choque em extrema alta velocidade entre Cure e Alcian Blue, se isso é possível, não sei, mas que é, é!!!

Um pé no experimentalismo também permeia todo o ep do People of Nothing.

Ah certamente se alguém for me perguntar, eu já deixei rodando até não poder mais, e lógico, vai entrar no set do CºLD brevemente.

***** Interview with People of Nothing *****

Q. When did People of Nothing starts, tell us about the history...
It was at a moment of my life when everything went bad… I was playing in a band, but had a fight with some of them and left. Had a fight with my best friend, a break up with my girlfriend, and worse of all my grandfather died, which was a big shock for me… I didn't have any other shelter, nothing else than music to express as much as I could what I felt at that time. I locked myself in my apartment, and did something like 40 tracks in two months. Then I showed pieces of this and that to friends of mine at work, musicians, who were interested to be part of it, and then we decided to make gigs.

Q: Who are your influences?
My grandfather (that I lost), was a big source of inspiration to me… I don't know, my influences have drifted, changed and evolved with time… I've been a kind of geek with the cinema, big fan of directors like Kubrick, Cronenberg, Hitchcock, Lynch, Carpenter, there're so many movies who changed me or just opened my eyes radically, I guess because of the soundtracks that I found in there maybe, must have had a big place in my influences… And just 80's underground movies in general. The series of our actual generation interested me a lot too, like "Enlightened", "The Wire" that kind of stuff. Writers like Nabokov, Edgar A. Poe, Dostoyevsky, Flaubert, Michaux. On another side, I've been influenced by musicians like Trent Reznor, Thurston Moore, Marvin Gaye, Robert Smith, Leonard Cohen, David Bowie. But today my biggest influences come from my family, and my circle of friends.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
The first one will be "The Downward Spiral" of Nine Inch Nails. Then after the order doesn't really matter… "The For Carnation" by the For Carnation. Definitely of one these albums of The Cure, it depends of the day and the mood (Faith, Seventeen seconds, Desintegration, Pornography). "Evol" from Sonic Youth. And the last one is a secret.

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Scared and thrilled. Not a very original answer I know, but the songs that I sing come from very secret and dark places sometimes, so I need to give them all the credibility, I have to respect these feelings, and face these monsters by switching between innocence and madness I suppose. I feel ashamed sometimes… and sometimes I feel free.

Q. How do you describe People of Nothing sounds?
Something like a midnight swim in an ocean. It's dark and a bit scary, but the more you swim in it, the more familiar it becomes.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
I'm pro active, so I can make two or three songs in the same time. Some people need to wait for a sparkle, an inspiration, some people can start anything anytime… I find my self very lucky, very grateful, because I'm in those two categories. I just need to have these conversations with myself, trying to keep control of my emotions, and at a moment letting something unexpected happen.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
True Widow. Mute Franco. AVGVST. Erwin Flynn. Exploding Eyes.

Q: Which bands you love to made a cover version?
I already made a cover, "Small town boy" from Bronski Beat, with a very slow tempo, like a heartbeat. Now I don't know, I have to think about it, it needs to be something not too obvious.

Q: What´s the plans for future....
We're gonna release the first album in March/April, with Anywave record ; we looking forward to play live and give great shows for people who want us, anywhere.

A minha felicidade em receber as respostas do meu chapa Mike do The Volta Sound foi absurda e me fez pensar muito como a música é algo fora dos limites de entendimento e pensamento. Como dois seres como Anton Newcombe e Blixa Bargeld podem exercem da mesma forma tamanha influência em um ser? Bom, se eu fosse responder por mim, seria fácil, fácil, porque idolatro ambos, mas como !?!!?!? Porque?!?!??! Qual a co-relação!!??!? Psicodelia e experimentalismo, não há ligação coerente entre ambos, mas porra, ler essa entrevista do The Volta Sound, que, pera aí, lançou em 05/01/2014 e primeiro grande e precioso album de 2014 na verdade um mini album chamado Fast Light With Radio Signal, que já na primeira música fode com tudo, veja o título Henri Chinaski, aos desavisados nome de um projeto a´la Spacemen 3 de outro maluco que já passou por estas páginas, o ponto é que o mini album exala psicodelia extrema, de entorpecer e dizer, é muito amor mesmo, pra viciar mesmo.

Agora, e o ponto Anton Newcombe x Blixa Bargeld?!?!? Na real, música é algo inexplicável mesmo, por essas e outras que amamos tudo isso pra caralho, e danem-se os que não tem esse sentimento, só digo o seguinte, 2014 promete.

Q. When did Volta Sound starts, tell us about the history...
Physically, it started when Ben called me from his college dorm and said he'd been driving around listening to a tape of songs I'd made. We named the band during that phone call even tho there was no band. It was just me and Ben talking about it maybe 6 months later, we combined a band I was in called Cloud City Beverage (me, Todd and Prieto) with what I now know was Davenport Colelctive (Ben and Matt).

We played a few shows like that, no bass, and after one of them, this super exciteable dude INSISTS he be our new bass player. I couldn't turn down that kind of insane passion and Dave Geddes showed up at practice the next day with a bass guitar, a mental disorder of some sort and arguably the most heart and soul of all of us.


Q: Who are your influences?
Well, I just totally cried hard listening to Yazoo - Upstairs At Eric's from 1982 so I'd say there's one. And Depeche Mode Speak and Spell is always on rotation for me. I grew up in a heavy gay area of Columbus Ohio surrounded by a black ghetto on 3 sides. That's easily MY biggest influence, hands down. A flamboyant passion for life and humanity from the streets and dance floors of marginalized people.

As for the rest of the band, who knows man. I know Cassidy is almost possessed like a demon by Syd Barrett. Todd loves Paul McCartney and Deep Purple, anything soft, silly and super commercial. Michael Jackson, etc.

That's about as good of guesses as I can come up with, really. Being human, man. Alive. I'm not copping out, that's just really what it is.

Q. How do you fell playing alive?
Playing live and playing for recordings are the same thing. Playing music itself is an intense magic. It's only done by humans. We SAY that some animals do it but that's just us saying that. Animals may make sounds because it pleases them and that's a form of magic, but they don't give the sounds any MEANING. That's the magic part.

We give it meaning and it moves us. Pure, unfiltered magic. So I feel that playing live music is one of the few true UFO mysteries we can witness.

Q. How do you describe Volta Sound sounds?
The Volta Sounds are rock and roll. I love all forms of music but this band plays this type. It's definitely music for altered states, although that's not intentional. It's just that the source is psyche based and therefore it's psychedelic music.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
There is no process for recording songs. If there is a microphone nearby, and I try to make sure there always is, and if there is a song happening that I want to capture, and there always is, then we put them together and voila. A recording.although, I am VERY into SOUND. I love sound. So I mix and master all our songs and I approach it as sound, rather than music. I try to make it as if the instruments are floating between the speakers, suspended in air but as real as being in the room with you.

That takes a bit of knowledge and some sideways understanding of the nature of reality. I really admire major producers.

E pra explicitar mais ainda isso tudo, vamos de Zeit, o bom e saudoso shoegazer elevado a potência máxima e eloquente como deve e precisa ser, pq aqui, a regra é celebrar-se a si mesmo, e o Zeit faz exatamente isso, uma celebracão de esporro sonoro, altíssimo, quem me derá ouvir Life is Just a Blur o ep dos caras ao vivo, deve certamente ser uma daquelas experiências eternas, exagero meu!?!?! Talvez, e daí!?!?!?!

Tremor, Silvery Lights, Sy e Beautiful Disaster mostram que o Zeit não veio ao mundo pra ser etereo, mas sim pra gritar através de microfonias e guitarras os seus medos, desejos e anseios, e é exatamente isso, que faz o Zeit estar acima.

Q. When did Zeit starts, tell us about the history...
Zeit took shape in early spring 2010. However we started making songs as early as 2008 -2009, it was first a modest collaboration between me (Erik Engblom) and Erik Jonsson; we got acquainted with each other while playing together in another band; later we both moved to Gothenburg where we met Björn Alm at the University of Gothenburg – the three of us started to make music.

Q: Who are your influences?
Personally, at the moment, I´m listening a lot to old Elliott Smith and Townes van Zandt stuff, but also to more contemporary stuff like Tamaryn and APTBS (a place to bury strangers). Wouldn’t call it influence though, rather inspiration.

Very hard, but I´ll give it a try

Q. How do you fell playing live?
I both love and hate playing live – it’s quite complex actually. I never liked attention, but at the same time I seem to desire it in some weird narcissistic way. I´m not shy, perhaps I can appreciate it more in time.

Q. How do you describe Zeits sound?
It´s basically pop music drenched in a lot of fuzz and reverb.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
We´re not a band doing 30 songs for an album, we work very hard on certain ideas and then we try to capture the idea on tape. The new EP (life is just a blur) for example, sounds quite raw – people call it lo-fi and perhaps it is, but that´s just our sound; we wanted to capture the actual sound and nothing more. Many band tend to record songs in the studio - laying layer upon layer, but then when they play live the songs sounds nothing like the studio versions.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
Tamaryn, A Place to Bury Strangers, Ice Age and Shannon and The Clams.

Q: Which bands you love to made a cover version?
Would be neat to do some Elliott Smith cover, perhaps something from Either/Or

Não existe Fudeca em São Paulo, uma obra que destoa da grande e macica producão nacional, é calcada em experimentalismos desconexos e talvez o mais notado é o Neubaten atualizado.

#1. "VENHA ME VER"

Junto com "hopeless..." é minha música predileta no EP (empate técnico, mas talvez ela tenha vantagem por claramente ter algo de Neubauten nela e também por eu achar que atingi liricamente o mesmo patamar da genialidade que existe no refrão de "schlampe!"). Ela foi construída a partir da fantasia (ou uma ilusão egocêntrica, quase autista) de um encontro que jamais aconteceu. É uma canção/ confissão absolutamente apaixonada, mas que de certa forma aponta algo sobre um receio do personagem...existe uma tensão entre a ansiedade gerada pelo desejo e uma questão de autopreservação acerca de se arriscar...

#2. "HOPELESS ROMANTIC"

A composição em si é claramente uma orquestração feita sobre um trecho obtido pelo método CUT UP. Acho muito interessante que existe um duplo sentido no título que passa direto na percepção das pessoas (qual o sentido de "hopeless"???) De alguma forma ela me remete à "13 mentiras" (do álbum Tschuess - 2008); eu me lembro daquela citação "de todas as mentiras que você me disse, 'eu te amo' é a minha preferida": o que é mais romântico de que mentir que eu teamo em 15 línguas diferentes???

#3. "UMA MADRUGADA COM VOCÊ..."

tempos modernos, relações à distancia: pense no refrão e tire suas conclusões...

#4. "NÃO EXISTE FUDECA EM SÃO PAULO"

OBVIAMENTE o nome é uma brincadeira / pastiche (e tiração de onda com os alternativos "mudernos, descolados e cabeçudos") cuja idéia seria fazer uma prévia no mesmo sentido do título do nosso próximo CD. A canção em si não existia até quase uma semana antes do lançamento do EP, mas esse SEMPRE foi o titulo do projeto. Por alguma razão eu lembrei do Jim Reid declarando no show do jesus & mary chain "fuck the beach, the city is better" e logo veio a idéia de subverter a frase: pronto! a letra estava lá. Uma ode meio torta à cidade...(da mesma forma que escrevi "você pega fogo" para o Rio...) mas para que eu não seja mal interpretado: eu adoro São Paulo, já pensei em me mudar, inclusive; só não tive a menor sorte com garotas paulistas...

To Here Knows When with Afor Gashum - An Interview

E o TBTCI viajou até Tel Aviv, Israel, e se deparou com uma preciosidade chamada Afor Gashum, a comecar pela peculiaridade de sua procedência e depois pelo mais importante, a música, doce e cândido shoegazer, cristalino e beirando uma linha tênue entre o dream pop, shoegazer e o pós punk, o album From The Inside seduz, um tanto pela crueza da gravacão e do sotaque que causou excitacão desde a primeira audicão para este que vos escreve.

Tardiamente fui ouvir a beleza do Afor Gashum, digo tardiamente mesmo porque o album é de fevereiro desde ano, ainda bem que o TBTCI conseguiu pegar a tempo de saboreá-lo ainda neste ano, porque certamente eu teria ficado chateado em perder uma beleza deste tamanho, recomendadíssimo para os sonhadores e apreciadores de microfonias e delírios de plantão.

***** Interview with Afor Gashum *****

Q. When did Afor Gashum start, tell us about the history...
Oded (the bass player) and I (Michal, the songwriter, singer and guitarist) played together years ago in an early incarnation of Afor Gashum, which made some waves in Tel Aviv’s indie circles. Then I went to live in New York and later London. A couple of years ago I started spending more time in Israel and decided to restart the band with Oded. We recruited Shai on guitar and Aviv on drums, and recorded the new album, “From the Inside”.

Q: Who are your influences?
Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, Joy Division, Slint

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Playing live is a treat. We kind of curl into our own immersive and prickly sound world, while also doing our best to project the feeling outwards, and when the audience gets drawn in, it’s a wonderful experience.

Q. How do you describe Afor Gashum sounds?
Cotton candy wrapped in steel wool.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
We spent three days in a proper studio recording the drums, and then met once a week over several months to record the guitars, bass and vocals in Shai’s home studio. It was great because it gave us the freedom to go deep and experiment and try things and get exactly the sounds we wanted.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
Beach Volleyball are a fantastic new shoegaze band from London. They have power and sensitivity and amazing guitarscapes. Their debut album “Broadcast” is a classic. Dead Wolf Club are also from London. They play spikey post-punk with shoegaze sensibilities, and seem to have no fear following their own idiosyncratic instincts. The Enablers are not that new, but not enough people seem to know about them. They’re from San Francisco and have a stunning combination of spoken word poetry, expressive drumming and beautiful guitar interplay.

Q: Which bands you love to made a cover version?
We were just talking about how great it would be to make a shoegazing cover of a Smiths song. Please don’t steal our idea!

Q: What´s the plans for future....
Our album “From the Inside” is coming out internationally on Land Speed Records on 18th November. I’m now in the process of writing new songs, and we should start working on a new album very soon.

Divide & Fall - Track by Track by David Callhan

The words on the new single are entirely influenced by their environment, like stunted thistles growing through pavement cracks.

Divide and Fall tries to express the sense of you and me against the world, when two people are trying to preserve their individuality while pulling together to survive. It’s trying to have faith in someone you care about, helping them go their own way while presenting a united front against those who would crush you for no reason. It’s a love song.

The Ten Commandments of Public Life describes a particularly fraught walk through a Tower Hamlets market, while feeling under psychic attack from shrieking Koran-bashers and hollering scripture-mongers. It’s expressing the wave of mixed messages you can be hit by when just walking down the street, if you’re receptive. Sailing down a river of sullied spirituality exemplified by the charlatan Crowley: “do what thou wilt get away with”. It’s a love song.

Q. When did Perpetual Heat get started, tell us about the history…
Perpetual Heat is really a continuation of solo projects that I have been working on for several years. Awhile back I would post things to MySpace under different monikers (Sudden Stars Lentamente) Finally, a couple of years ago I decided on the name Perpetual Heat and that is what I use for all of my solo-ish recordings now.

Q: Who are your musical influences?
It’s just so tough because depending on what you are writing, you may be thinking about a particular song but because of the mood instead of the actual sounds. So the influence is more abstract. Having said that, I really like Phil Elverum (Microphones/Mt Eerie). Unwound. Clipd Beaks. Les Savy Fav. Low. Jesu. And so many others.

Q. What are your top 5 albums of all time?

Q. How do you describe Perpetual Heat's sound?
I describe it as odd pop with touches of electronic elements, ambient sound, and noise.

Q: Tell us about the writing and recordingprocess?
I really do most of the recording at home with a pretty minimal setup. I like using a small amount of tools and see what I can do with them. Usually that entails a drum machine, guitars, synth, and my laptop.

Q. Being that Perpetual Heat is a solo project, do you ever play live?
I have this idea that for each new release I would like to play a single show. It worked really well the first time but since I have other bands that I am in and play lots of shows with them it has proven to be a bit more difficult. I would still like to do that in the future though.

Q. Which new bands would you recommended, or what are you listening to right now?
I really like he new Pharmakon record. This new tape by a band called Little Spoon is really good. Iceage’s new album has been playing a lot in my world. Also, The Body’s new album is amazing. And the Run the Jewels album that came out this year is great.

Q: If you were to make a cover, what band or song might you want to recreate?
I’ve wanted to cover Yo la Tengo – Deeper Into Movies for a while. I might just to that.

Q: What are the future plans for Perpetual Heat?
More music for sure. I would also like to play another show with some of the new songs I have released. And I would really like to see what would happen if I took some of my newer tracks into a studio with someone that actually knows how to record.

Q. When did Pinn'd starts, tell us about the history...
We met each other late last year at a party, and decided to meet up for a jam. Writing the tracks happened really easy and we quickly had this EP together, so we just kept going. We click really well, so we always have heaps of fun and get things done quickly.

Q: Who are your influences?
Nancy comes from a backyard blues type background, she's into blues in a big way. Annemarie listens to a music diet of electronica, mainly bands like Keep Shelly in Athens, Bonobo, UNKLE.

Free jazz,kraut, psych, improvisacão, maluquices, lisergia, piracão, eis que o TBTCI volta a sua raiz, depois de um período fora do ar, por motivos claros, o ECAZ agora é a casa do TBTCI, então é justifícavel, certo? Óbvio que sim.....

Agora separei o retorno pra desgracar de vez os psych maníacos de plantão, porque os dinamarqueses do Papir são daqueles iguarias que vem de tempos em tempos, Kraftwerk, Ash Ra Temple, NEU!, Spacemen 3, VU e tudo que soar esquisito e inovador faz parte do poder de ataque dos caras, o debut Stundum é daqueles albuns que você vai escutando e vai necessitando de psicotrópicos, porque é inerente o vicio do negócio, não há como sair ileso.

Como eu sempre digo, o TBTCI não é recomendado a indie kids, tampouco a pessoas que sofrem com dependência, porque o Papir causa dependência sim, mas é só você vir preparado, traga seus drinks e demais acessórios e fique a vontade, e para elucidar tudo isso, deixo a palavra com os gnomos do Papir.

Q. When did Papir starts, tell us about the history...
The three of us have played together in different constellations for many years now. We used to play with a singer, but as you can probably imagine – it can be very difficult for a singer to jam with instrumentalists. So when the last singer decided to quite the band, we started taking the processes of jam a lot more serious. Not that we didn’t jam back then, but now we had somehow come to the realization – that instrumental, jam-based music, was the kind of music that we’ve always wanted to play.

Q: Who are your influences?
There are probably a lot! Guess the experimental part of the whole krautrock movement is quite important to us. From the funky and intense grooves of Can to the pastoral psychedelicisms and ambient drone scapes of band like Neu! And Harmonia to the more freaked out jams of bands like Ash Ra Temple and Guru Guru. Then there is the electric Miles Davis periode. And there is the importance of proto post rock groups such as Talk Talk and Dif Juz. But we also just really dig all time classic rock groups like the Doors, Rolling Stones and Hendrix of course.

We LOVE playing live! That’s what it is all about. The live situation can be very useful for us as a way to try out more improvised and unfinished stuff. It really means lot and it is difficult to compare the energy of playing in front of an audience to anything else. Sometimes everything just melts together – the sound, the energy from the music and the energy from the people in the audience. It’s is a quite unique feeling.

Q. How do you describe Papir sounds?
We don’t. Well, the description “psychedelic postrock” may seem fitting in some ways, but we don’t really think much about words and descriptions, since it’s about the MUSIC and about feeling the music.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
“Stundum” and “III” are both recorded in a house in northern part of Denmark – far away from civilization and everyday life. We spent a week recording one album. We also had Jonas Munk (Causa Sui, Manual ect.) with us, recording and mixing the albums.

Q: Which bands you love to made a cover version?
We actually use to have a cover band! We also play a set of Yo La Tengo-songs once and that’s really fun. But really don’t do covers these days

Q: What´s the plans for future....
We are playing some concerts in Germany in November together with Electric Moon. That will be really fun! We also have a record coming out in the end of October, which is a session called “Papermoon Sessions” we did last year with Dave and Lulu from Electric Moon and Mogens from Øresund Space Collective. We will also into the process of writing some new material!

Dreamtime with ECAZ - Espaco Cultural Antena Zero

Basicamente o TBTCI nasceu de um sonho, um sonho que há quase cinco anos surgiu na mente deste que vos escreve, onde, simplesmente eu queria escrever minhas impressões pessoais acerca das coisas que amo, ou seja, as bandas que idolatro, ou ainda, as novas que iniciei a idolatria, e viver assim é algo que sempre esteve lado a lado comigo, a vida é dura diariamente, percalcos, dificuldades, desafios e tristezas fazem parte do dia a dia, então porque não, desafiar a vida, e expor os sonhos explicitando mesmo que de forma virtual suas impressões!?!? E assim o TBTCI surgiu, humilde e foi galgando conhecimento e amadurecendo dia após dia, e naturalmente os contatos, entrevistas com ídolos antigos e recentes foi inevitável, e devagarinho tornou-se um ponto referencial pra muita gente, não que eu me gabe disso, mas tenho muito, muito orgulho do trabalho realizado, e dentre tudo isso, o TBTCI conheceu a Antena Zero, e foi uma história de amor a primeira vista.

Quase 50 programas já foram ao ar, programas feitos com imenso prazer, coracão e dedicacão, e surgiu uma forte e intensa admiracão mutua entre Chiclé, Tatiana, e Renato, e enfim o fruto de tudo isso surgira amanhã dia 19/10.....estar aqui no ECAZ e vivenciar todo o processo é uma experiência que eu precisava e devo partilhar com todos, sim todos que se interessam por algo chamado MÚSICA, porque a Antena Zero acredita que a música pode sim salvar, não salvar o mundo hipócrita e medíocre que vivemos, mas salvar a sua, a minha e a alma de quem deixar se seduzir e abduzir por isso, como rege nosso lema:

"AQUI NA ANTENA ZERO A GENTE NÃO TOCA SÓ O QUE VOCÊ QUER ESCUTAR MAS AQUILO QUE VOCÊ PRECISA OUVIR!"

Isso é levado tão a sério por toda a família da Antena Zero que sim, acabamos por acreditar tanto nisso, que eis que amanhã o ECAZ vira ao mundo, aconchegante, sedutor, barulhento, sexy, inovador, sim porque este é apenas o comeco, porque nós não vamos para nunca, acreditem, jamais seremos calados porque a forca da música é muito maior do que qualquer pequeno ou grande problema que possa vir a surgir.

Eu pessoalmente, convido todos a partilharem essa experiência conosco, será realmente soberbo.
