Kill Pretty with Louise Le Hir - An Interview

***** Interview with Louise Le Hir *****

Q. When did Louise Le Hir start? Tell us about the history...
A. I’ve played in bands for a while, but a couple years ago I found myself playing solo and with a wealth of unrecorded material on my hands. I decided to start recording just a few songs at a time with Matt Rendon (of magnificent Midtown Island Studio fame) using guest musicians, and the sessions turned into a nine song album. The band came together shortly afterwards, and ever since I’ve been playing with Annie Dolan, Adan Martinez, Gabe Hostetler and Joel Crocco. We love each other. I love you my kittens! (I mean my tough guys).

Q. Who are your influences?
A. As a song writer my influences come from experiences in life, mine as well as observations of the people around me. The crazy shit! (“Sleep on the ground / With a bed made out of cowboy hat”). The fun times! (“Give me everything / Ev-er-y-thing I want”). The heartbreaks (“I only fall in love to feel the pain”).

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
A. Rubber Soul/Revolver, GP/Grievous Angel, Sweetheart of the Rodeo, Nashville Skyline, Rumors

Q. How do you feel playing live?
A. I AM PASSIONATE! on stage. and off:) I love performing and dancing around. I love the dynamic of our whole band together. Sometimes I nearly wreck my voice. The band, they understand and never miss the feeling. We don’t set out to be the tightest band but the loosest band in a way I dig.

Q. How do you describe Louise Le Hir sound?
A. Cosmic American Psychedelic French Dream Pop . . . but here’s how we’re described in an upcoming book:

There was Annie with her heavily banded eyeliner eyes flapping a long tangle of blond-streaked hair while strumming Beatles arpeggios, dream-visioned Adan in his wide-brimmed Panama hat pounding mercilessly on the drums, wild-eyed Joel layering reverb pedal-effects with his Melody Maker held chest high, and brooding Gabe, dressed in black from head to boot, locking in country-esque bass lines while glaring darkly into the ether. LouIse began by dancing and swirling about the stage, cracking her tambourine against her already bruised hip, her short red dress riding against her thigh, but when she grabbed the microphone it was her giant Valley of the Dolls stare — thick blue shadow, mascara and black cat penciled gaze — it was that look blared out to the crowd just like her voice, broadcast at a loud amplitude. -BH

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
A. I come in to the studio with a song, we (Matt and I, Annie, or whoever else makes it in) learn it and then discuss the sound. Matt will usually record the drums first and then we start layering.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?

A. I love the music of Dustin Lovelis. His band has a great sound!

But hey ya! Here in Tucson we have such a scene — too many brilliant artists to list.

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
A. That band at Disneyland made up of all bears.

Q: What are your plans for the future?
A. 2nd album, tape, more songs and because of USA election outcome, either getting my masters degree to work as a humanitarian or simply using all my dresses for shelter to build tents for all of us. I love camping. and giving away clothes!

Q. Any parting words?
Yes. I will have a song in Portuguese on our next album.

Q.Who’s a Coco Meme?
A. You Are! Thank You! xoxoLLH and A and A and G and J!!!
