Candle Burning by Kate Martin - An Interview

***** Interview with Kate Martin *****

Q. When did everything starts for Kate Martin, tell us about the history...
A. I started writing when I was 16, met my manager when I was 17, recorded and toured my first album when I was 18, now I'm 20 and about to release my second.

Q: Who are your influences?
A. I have so many. I'm especially intrigued by female artists such as Lesley Feist, Chan Marshal (Cat Power), Olivia Merilahti (The Do) and of course the legendary June Carter, that woman has class.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
A. Sally Seltmann - Heart That's Pounding
Sparkle Horse - It's A Wonderful Life
Feist - The Reminder
Beach House - Teen Dream
Anathallo - Floating World

Q. How do you feel playing alive?
A. I guess it depends on a lot of different variables, like the atmosphere, crowd, sound quality. But holistically nothing in the world gives me greater satisfaction!

Q. How do you describe your sounds?
A. When making 'Hand Me My Bow And Arrow' I had a vision of a record that displayed as much diversity in it's dynamics, emotion, song structure and lyrical content as possible. I wanted the listener to be able to find at least one element in each song that resonates deeply within them, I hope people find my music a personal experience, something tangible. Is Tangible a genre description?

Q: Tell us about the process of recording , Hand Me My Bow And Arrow?
A. It was an on and off process that stretched over 18 months. We had some of my close and very talented friends come into the studio to sing. Lots of early starts and late nights, but the whole experience was a real journey thanks to my producer Michael Carpenter.

Q: Which bands do you love to make a cover version?
A. At the moment, anything by Simon and Garfunkel, true poets, so many artists these days have elements of Simon and Garfunkel's music in their own material.

Q: What´s the plan for future....
A. Short term, releasing the album on the 23rd of march, then tour kicks off late april and goes all through may, then a mid year migration to Melbourne!
