***** Interview with Meave *****
A few years ago, Alexis and Nicolas were jamming with some friends as a hobby, but without a drummer and using a beatbox. They were playing endless improvised psych music and after a while, it seemed that there was a potential for actually starting something more serious. Michèle joined the project about two years ago and at first, there were 5 members (two guitars, one synth, one bass, one drum), and still no name for the band. For different reasons, we ended up jamming just the three of us, creating our own music and after a looooooong process, we decided to call ourselves Meave (inspired by a feminist installation artwork, “The Dinner Party” by Judy Chicago).
Q: Who are your influences?
Even though we have some common musical influences, our musical backgrounds vary (that’s why we decided to make three lists of 5 best albums of all time! Sorry for not respecting the rule...). Influences include: krautrock, post-punk, stoner rock, music from the 60’s, space rock, shoegaze, old blues heroes; Joy Division, The Velvet Underground, Spacemen 3, The Monks, The Black Angels, Thurston Moore, Viet Cong (Preoccupations), OM, Disappears, Thee Oh Sees, Neu!, Cosmic Dead, White Manna, The Chills, Earth, The Kills, Ty Segall, Rakta, Follakzoid, Beak, Mr.Airplane Man, The White Stripes, Total Control, The Stooges, Pink Floyd, The Cramps, PJ Harvey, Bauhaus, The Feelies, Faust, Amon Düül II, and more and more and more… See below for more information about our influences.
Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
You are probably aware that this is a pretty hard question to answer. For now…
Alexis (bass guitar, synth, vocals)
· John Lee Hooker & Canned Heat – Hooker ‘N Heat
· Föllakzoid – III
· Mississippi Fred McDowel – Live in NYC
· NEU! – NEU!
· ZZ Top – Tres Hombres
Nicolas (lead guitar)(could make a different list everyday…)
· The Velvet Underground - White Light/White Heat
· The Stooges - The Stooges
· Hawkwind - In Search of Space
· Can - Tago Mago
· Spacemen 3 - Playing with Fire
Michèle (drums, vocals)
· The White Stripes-The White Stripes (the chain of the songs Cannon and Astro is simply the best thing ever)
· Joy Division (sorry, can’t choose a particular album)
· Gossip-Movement
· The Monks- Black Monk Time
· Eagulls-Eagulls
Q. How do you feel playing live?
We haven’t played much yet, but we enjoy it pretty much. It’s a great sensation to play loud and feel immerged in a cloud of smoke and adrenaline, supported by people who enjoy what we have to offer. We would love to play shows around spring 2018.
Q. How do you describe Meave sounds?
Unpolished, stoner rock, post-punk, shoegaze, dark wave
Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
We create our music together (we have a great creation process together) and Michèle writes the lyrics. So far, we recorded only two songs (No Boredom and Flowers on the Stage) with a friend that created his own studio here in Montreal (Ryan Battistuzzi). We recorded the tracks without verdubbing. We made several takes with all instruments at once, and then we chose the best ones and made minor adjustments, mixes and mastering with Ryan. This first experience was amazing and we are looking forward to recording new songs.
Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
From Montreal: BARRE, No Joy, DEAF, Pachyderm;
From elsewhere: Vacant Lots, Lucid Dream, The KVB, Lumerians, Föllakzoid, Rakta, The Soft Moon, Minami Deutsch, Cosmonauts, Tonstartssbandht, Ultimate Painting, Psychic Ills, Cosmic Dead, White Manna, Total Control and lots of others.
Q: Which band would you love to make a cover version of?
We were actually discussing the possibility of making a cover. Hmmm… Something like Spacemen 3 –Revolution?
Q: What are your plans for the future?
We want to record three new songs in the near future and release an EP (vinyl) around springtime. And play live!
Q: Any parting words?
Stay tuned for more from Meave…
And thank you so much Renato for your interest in our music and your support.
