Reset Your Mind with Document - An Interview

***** Interview with Document *****

Q. When did Document start? Tell us about the history...
In 2008 I moved back to Israel after living in Guatemala and the US for 22 years. When I came back I started hanging out with my cousin, who was playing music with some good friends from the army. I joined them and we started an new wave band called Modern Tapes. After the release of on EP and played shows and festivals for a couple of years, we felt stuck and decided we needed to free ourselves from the genre. We got rid of some instruments, went back to basics, and decided to rename ourselves Document. In 2014 we released our first EP called 'Reset Your Mind'. A couple of years after that we started working on our debut album.

Q: Who are your influences?
We have a wide range of influences that seem to change over time. Right now we're really looking forward to the new Protomartyr album. Other influences include The Fall, The Wire, Blonde Redhead, Fugazi, The Strokes, Interpol, Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, among many many others.

Q. Make a list of 5 albuns of all time…
Fugazi - The Argument
Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Dinosaur Jr. - You're Living All Over Me
Pixies - Doolittle

Q. How do you feel playing live?
We love playing live. It feels the most natural to us. The energy between the band and the fans is always really thrilling. The performance aspect also brings out more depth from the songs.

Q. How do you describe Document sounds?
Fuzzy distorted guitars with a smooth bass and machine like drums. Vocals ranging from I think that our sound is the essence of everything we love to listen to and play. Most of our writing comes form the band's dynamic and jamming together and lots of "hey that sounds awesome, how about this?" moments. Sometimes one of us comes with some home prepared riff or chord progression and we all donating our ideas. With that, we're always
thinking about what "feel" do we want to express. Same goes for the vox and lyrics.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
We recorded the album by ourselves in our recording/rehearsal studio Junk (www.junktlv.com). Our guitarist Yaniv Brenner opened it a couple of years ago and it's the best place to rehearse and record in Tel Aviv. It's our home. We tracked all the songs in a weekend. It was really an awesome experience. It's a lot of trial and error until we found the sound we like. It was awesome working with Bill Skibbe, who mixed the album. We love the work he's done with Protomartyr and The Kills and we felt he's so essential in the making of the album.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
Fastest Leap. also Charly Bliss, Baked and Remo Drive.

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
We would love to do a cover version to Television, The Clash. Or 311. Whatever works, right?

Q: What are your plans for the future?
We're working on a tour in the UK. Besides that we've got enough material for another EP, so maybe we'll begin working on that in a few months.

Q: Any parting words?
Thanks for the feature, stay tuned for the album release!
