Aircraft Dope with Submeet - An Interview

***** Interview with Submeet *****

Q. When did Submeet start? Tell us about the history...
We started calling ourselves submeet in spring 2016, after Jacopo (the drummer) joined the band.

But the project exists since 2014, with me (Zannunzio) and Andrea meeting at a party. We started playing covers of indie rock bands of mid 2000’s in the basement of a bar here in Mantua, and then move on to writing song with stoner rock influence. After rediscovering bands such as My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive and Ride we started to define our sound and writing more gazing yet post-punk driven songs.

Q. Who are your influences?
Our influences are old and new shoegaze bands like: My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Ringo Deathstarr, A Place To Bury Strangers. But we also take inspiration from some post-punk bands like: Preoccupations, Eagulls, The Soft Moon, Protomartyr.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
Loveless - My Bloody Valentine;
Viet Cong – Preoccupations;
Goo – Sonic Youth;
Siamese Dream - Smashing Pumpkins;
Neon – Lantlôs

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Playing live gives us the chance of letting the people experience our wall of sound, and also the possibility of run wild on stage. We like to create a dialogue and a direct and sincere connection with the audience and the organizers.

Q. How do you describe Submeet sounds?
It can be divided in two parts: we have the rhythm section, made of post-punk bass riffs with fifth and octave jumps (I’m a Carlos Dengler from Interpol lover) and Jacopo’s puzzled drums, that sometimes lead to mathematical parts; on the other hand we have Andrea’s guitar, which is played with the whammy bar like Kevin Shield and is altered with a lot of effects, creating a powerful yet oscillating layer of sound.

Q. Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
First we recorded the structure of the song all together, then we layered additional guitar riffs and noisy parts and finally we provided vocals and percussions. It took a lot of work and time on mixing, trying to find the right balance between all instruments.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
We like a lot Flyying Colours, Fews, B Boys, Diiv, Beach Fossils and so on. We also support some really good Italian projects, like Rev Rev Rev and Human Colonies.

Q. Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
We would like to cover one of My Bloody Valentine’s “You Made Me Realise”, especcially for the “holocaust” section, which is our favorite part.

Q. What are your plans for the future?
We are going to release our first Ep this week, so we want to play as much as possible. In the meantime, we are writing new songs, in anticipation of a new Ep, that we hope it could be released next year. Any parting words?

Check our Facebook and Instagram page for any updates about us! Cheers from Italy
