Sneaky Flutes and Sneaky Flute Music with Swirlies - An Interview

***** Interview with Swirlies *****

Q. When did Swirlies start, tell us about the history...
Seana and Damon started playing together in a Go-Go’s cover band organized/fronted by Boston punk impresario Rusty Nails (the Creeps). This group briefly became Raspberry Bang in 1989/90. Andy (a high school chum of Damon) joined on bass in fall 1990. After drummer Jason Fitzgerald departed, Ben Drucker joined the band – that was the first line-up of “the” Swirlies (one of several names conceived by Ben…can’t remember the others, but they may have been less ridiculous). Fun coincidence – a hardcore band that Damon was in (The Stigmatics from Plymouth, MA) and a band that Seana was in (Hedwig) played a show at the First Parish Church in Cambridge, MA opening for Rusty’s band Cabal – this was summer 1988 or so. Andy didn’t play an instrument then, but drove the Stigmatics to the show & took some photos.

Q: Who are your influences?
Many things – from hardcore to shoegaze to Doris Day. Also, the crashing of the surf, the haunting croak of the black-crowned night-heron, and so forth.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
In no particular order (and taking liberties with the term “album”), these records give the listener a special view into our innermost thoughts:

- The Primitives’ “Do the Ostrich" b/w "Sneaky Pete" 7"
- “Smithfits” (Misfits' “Legacy of Brutality" partnered with Smiths' "Hatful of Hollow” on a cassette mixtape) (This went on almost every Swirlies up through 2001).
- Flipper’s “Sex Bomb" b/w "Brainwash” 7”
- Mr. Quark’s "Enjoy Nuoc-Mam With Mr. Quark” 7”
- “This Is Boston Not L.A.” compilation LP

Honorable mention (for some in the band): a tie between Big Star’s “#1 Record” and Chilton’s “Like Flies On Sherbert”

Q. How do you feel playing live?
We feel like the wind!

Q. How do you describe Swirlies sounds?
Noisy, containing humor and deeply-felt emotion, life-affirming, bearing a variety of scents…like the wind!

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
We haven’t recorded a new song since about 2002, so the process is excruciating! Our members are now in Sweden, Virginia, Massachusetts, and New York – that doesn’t help. With any luck, after our “Silver Ostrich Anniversary” tour this July (commemorating 25 years as a band, albeit with periods of inactivity), we will use remote methods to complete a backlog of songs written over the past 11 years.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
This is impossible to answer. And further, why listen to us? We are mostly 40ish year olds still playing in a band called “Swirlies”.

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
Several of us appeared in public as Black Flag at a Halloween show – so we have already achieved our wildest dreams in that regard.

Q: What´s the plans for future...
Make new music together again, with periodic meeting up in odd years to make wind noises.

Q: Any parting words?
Be vigilant always, prepared anytime.
