***** Interview with Grave Pool *****
I started recording Grave Pool songs on my own at the beginning of 2014. I had moved away from everyone I knew to start graduate school outside of Nashville, and recording songs was just a way for me to keep sane through the bleak Tennessee winter.
Q: Who are your influences?
I think my love of Sarah Records and Creation Records bands is pretty evident in my songs. Bands like Slowdive and Another Sunny Day really influenced my taste for dreamy reverb and jangling guitar lines. However, I also have a deep admiration for a lot of 80's synth pop that people write off as being cheesy. The synthesizers on records by people like Gary Numan and The Human League are just so attention grabbing and ridiculous you have to love them.
Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
Really tough call. Off the top of my head in no order I'd say
Get Lost - The Magnetic Fields,
Souvlaki - Slowdive,
Keep It Like A Secret - Built to Spill,
Armchair Apocrypha - Andrew Bird,
Summer Sun - Yo La Tengo
Q. How do you feel playing live?
Grave Pool doesn't play live as much as I'd like to. I think in general, I tend to be too much of a perfectionist to completely love playing music live. For some people, it is a freeing experience to perform without being able to redo the bad parts. For me, I prefer recording songs because I can take my time to experiment and make everything perfect before letting them go.
Q. How do you describe Grave Pool sounds?
Mountains of jangly reverb obscured just out of view by a wash of synthesizer haze.
Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
I track everything alone in my bedroom. Lyrics are usually the very last thing I work on after developing the rest of the music. I tend to start out with either a synth or guitar riff I like and try to be as editorial as possible while pairing it with different elements until somehow it eventually turns into a song.
Q. Which new bands do you recommended
Alvvays and Mutual Benefit put out probably my two favorite records of the last year and a half or so. I'm looking forward to DIIV's new record later this year as well. Swedish psychers, Anti Pony look very promising as well.
Q: Which bands would you love to make a cover version of?
One of the first Grave Pool tracks was a cover of Another Sunny Day's 'You Should All Be Murdered'. I really enjoy breathing new life into old Sarah Records tunes. I've thought about taking a stab at 'If I Could Shine' by The Sweetest Ache for a while now. I also just finished a cover of some of the music from the 1984 arcade game, Marble Madness.
Q: What´s the plan for the future....
I'm in the early stages of tracking demos for the next Grave Pool release and hoping to put together a live lineup in the northeast US this summer to play some more gigs.
Q: Any parting words?
Be excellent to each other.
