Cupid Come with My Invisible Friend - An Interview

***** Interview with My Invisible Friend *****

Q. When did My Invisible Friend start, tell us about the history...
MYIF started in 2013, developing an old project in which two of us were involved: it was our intention to change our sound and make it more similar to the one of the bands we love, and also to differ from the other bands of the local scene. After few gigs with a new drummer, things stopped for a bit until Joe, the one who stands behind our walls of sound, joined the band. It's always nice to tell how it happened: we went to a local festival where Telescopes were playing and it was like an epiphany for us.

For the first months we have been meeting without any clear purposes in our heads, we just spent hours improvisating and playing never ending songs... But soon we realised that much of that material was good so, with the help of the last-but-not-least entry Roland (right, it's a Roland TR-505 drum machine ), we started writing our first songs that include the ones you will hear in our first EP which is expected to come out next January.

Q: Who are your influences?
There are so many bands we love, and we think that each of them has influenced our work somehow: From Cocteau Twins to Slowdive, Spiritualized, JAMC, Ride, Telescopes and MBV of course; but also krautrock groups such as Neu! And “newer” ones like Yuck, Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Hebronix, Dead Skeletons or APTBS.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
We swear it has been really difficult! Here's the list.

The Beatles- Revolver
The Velvet Underground-White Light White Heat
My Bloody Valentine-Loveless
Spacemen 3-Dreamweapon:an evening of contemporary sitar music
Neu!-Neu!2

Q. How do you feel playing live?
C-Playing live is like being suspended for a while. You stop thinking and just touch your instrument hearing what it comes out.

A-To me is sort of a meditation. I don't really manage to connect with the public, it's more intimate. Between me and myself only, like a ritual of purification.

Q. How do you describe My Invisible Friend´s sounds?
C-Intimate

J-Deep breathing

A-Bites and kisses at the same time

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
We recorded, mixed and mastered our songs at Big Pine Creek Recording Studio in Parma, where we live. Since some of them are deeply based on improvisation, we used two different methods according to the song we were recording. Two of them were recorded basically “live” to mantain their natural homogeneity and also to exploit the sound potential of the space we were in, while the others are recorded in a more traditional way. We had a lot of fun and we're very satisfied with that!

A-I only regret having eaten pizza for days. It's hard to concentrate after you've eaten so much pizza.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended
C-Allie's dope from Parma J-May Days in Barcelona and Allie's, yep

A-I'm really digging Toy now. I can also recommend another amazing italian band called Throw Down Bones.

Q: Which bands would you love to make a cover version of?
“Rubber” , from Yuck. An incredible tune.

Q: What´s the plan for the future....
To go around Italy and hopefully Europe to play our music.

Don't forget to look after our new ep, out on january the 15th!
