***** Interview with The Junkyard Liberty *****
Q. When The Junkyard Liberty starts tell us about the history...
Well it was quite strange really, i moved to the deepest most wonderfull place in the countryside in france about ten years ago, after having taken time out to travel around europe,my wife and i decided to settle in a remote countryside setting ....during this time i was'nt involved in music in any way, apart from listening to it....i had spent the previous 15 years making music ,i was tired of the game and thought i would never really pick up the guitar again...and probably never woul've done so if it had not been for a series of synchronistic meetings which led young 'alban' ,my song writing partner, to my door!...he phoned me out of the blue and said he had heard that there was an ex telescope..living in the area and would it be possible for him to come around and have a jam at some time!!...he was a fan of the scopes, i was a little astounded....and just said why not....i was a liitle shocked on meeting him because he was so young and fresh faced.....but i just thought 'hey'..yeah lets play.....it became quite obvious, very soon that he was something special. we played the blues all night untill four in the morning, and then in the morning we played some more.....i was astounded that one so young had so much soul and blues inside of him......we are kindred spirits, and it just works between us.....so the junkyard liberty just sort of formed itself!...he brought me out of retirement maaaan! hahah!!...........................
Q: Who are your influences?
My influences are many......i grew up listening to rock 'n' roll , country and folk..and all the great music from the 60's and the 70's , my mother loved elvis and buddy holly and the everley brothers, my father was a johnny cash fan, so i was exposed to that as a boy, and that is the sort of music i truly love! .......listing one's five top albums is a tricky one as there are so many, i love listening to albums ,i allways have ,it's a fantastic thing to do , what a pastime..i have few regrets in live, but once i sold over three hundred albums that i had collected since i was very young...i needed the money !!.....some of my favourite albums were among them , the one's amongst them that i now have on c.d ,
Q. Made a list of 5 albuns of all time…
That are probably my top five are .....
bob dylan another side of bob dylan.....
neil young...harvest......
david bowie..hunky dory......
love... forever changes........
the rolling stones...exile on main street...............
Q. How do you fell playing live?
Playing live for me is a love hate experience.....when i was younger i absolutely loved playing live and was infact playing live every week for five years, with the telescopes as well as recording....we were a hardworking band. now i prefer not to play live , my thing is the studio i love to create...playing live is something quite different for me. however we are in the process of putting together a live band ,so sometime next year we will start to tread the boards!!! we just need a good drummer!!! hahah! ...............
Q. How do you describe The Junkyard Liberty' s sounds?
I don't really know how to describe our sound..'it's a rocky affair sometimes with a subtle twist ' how about that!!........
Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
Loving this question!....i love recording songs!......we like it best when we write a tune, and then spend all night recording it...we pick up on the feel ,with two accoustics...and then set about layering tracks with various instruments and sounds...i am fortunate to have a small recording set up, enough for what we need ........
The process of taking something from inside of you ,to something coming through a set of speakers is an amazing artform....you really are creating when you are doing that, and it can be sometimes dissapointing and sometimes elating... and the more you do it the more interesting it becomes.....so i don't think i shall ever stop now, i will do it untill the day i die! because there is nothing better for me!!.......
Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
You got me there dude!!...i don't really listen to much new music, although alban has introduced me to a lot of great stuff....recently i have seen the black angels! i think they are amazing.....i have also seen the dead skeletons...really incredible.......and i love there music.....although i ai'nt quite sure how new these bands are..hahah!!....................
Q: Which bands you love to made a cover version?
We don't really do many covers...prefering to create our own music, however it is wonderfull to sit around jamming, playing,a few beers a few good people, nice and easy atmosphere, singing a few songs,my party piece is 'honky tonk woman'..hahah!.....we have talked about doing a cover of the velvets 'rock 'n' roll......i love that song and it is great to play!!...oh and we love to play neil young's 'my my hey hey !!........would love to cover a dylan song ..!..........
Q. About the past, tell us about the Telescopes´years, how was it? About the gigs, are they really insane?
I allways love to talk about the telescopes...so thanks for asking the question!! hahah!..it was a truly amazing experience, and i would'nt change anything....the gigs ranged from one man and his dog in the beginning,to sold out gigs up and down the country...if you can remember it you wer'nt there!!..haha! the gigs were never tame! i went to see stephen play in france about a year ago, it was strange to see the band as a punter, but they were really good!....it made me realise what a great band we were back then.and yes the gigs were insane ,the whole thing was real mad!we worked hard rarely ever slept, and partied real good!!....just like a good rock'n' roll band should!! haha!......i take every day as it comes, i just gonna go happily along my path, tread lightly, hurt nobody, try and do some good if i can, and just thank the universe for allowing this wonderfull experience called life to unfold in front of me!! .....thats my future plans and parting words dood!.....
Q: Any parting words?
All the best to you and yours..and thanks again for taking an interest!
