***** Interview with Hurricane Heart Attack *****
Q. When Hurricane Heart Attack starts, tell us about the history...
It all started in the summer of 2009 when my brother Charly found one of my old guitars in the closet of my room at my parent´s house in our hometown of Posadas, Misiones in the north-east of Argentina. I had a few bands back then when I was in highschool, but quit when I moved to Buenos Aires to study architecture and never played guitar again until that summer when I heard Charly play. We spent the endless and hot afternoons jamming and playing the songs of the bands we loved. After a few months we felt the strong need to start writing our own stuff, and that´s how we ended up recording our first EP, Summer, in 2010. We had no clue what so ever of how to write, produce or record but we did it anyways. It´s 100% homemade, recorded with only one microphone on a crappy PC. We hate how it sounds, but we love the songs in it… The whole experience gave us enough confidence to keep working on new songs, new plans, so that same year we begun recording Hurricane Love which was self-released in 2011. In 2012 a lot of things happened to the band: Charly moved to Buenos Aires, we released the album via the argentine independent label Sadness Discos and we played a lot of live gigs around the country. There have been many changes in the lineup since then, but we like to think of ourselves like a big brotherhood. We have a lot of beautiful friends that always collaborate with us… A few months ago we released our latest album Happiness Revisited.
Q: Who are your influences?
The Brian Jonestown Massacre is like the bible for us, Anton is the great preacher. We learnt so many things from him. The Warlocks is a great influence as well, we took our name from their hymn Hurricane Heart Attack… Other big names for us are: Spacemen 3, Spectrum, Spiritualized, The Jesus And Mary Chain, The Asteroid #4, Big Star, The Velvet Underground, The Rolling Stones, The Byrds, Bob Dylan. We also love a lot of new bands like Dead Rabbits, Black Market Karma, Rancho Relaxo, Chatham Rise, Tamaryn, Spirit Ya, Magic Castles, Allah-las.
Folk music from our region like Chamamé and Paraguayan Guarania runs strong in our blood too…
Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
1. The Brian Jonestown Massacre – Take It From The Man!
2. The Warlocks – Phoenix
3. The Velvet Underground – The Velvet Underground & Nico
4. The Byrds – Mr. Tambourine Man
5. The Rolling Stones – 12x5
Q. How do you fell playing alive?
Playing live is a strange thing, it can be amazing but very stressing at the same time. We feel the recordings are the perfect state of our songs, and sometimes it´s hard to represent them live on stage like they where produced for the album. That´s why we simplify many of them, making them more direct and raw… Our live gigs are a constant “work in progress” and we enjoy the process.
Q. How do you describe Hurricane Heart Attack sounds?
We like to say that our music is psychedelic because the word has such a wide meaning, not only musical, you can use almost all the influences you have within you to create sounds, to write songs. All we do comes out of love, so I guess our music sounds like love.
Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
All the songs are composed by Charly and me. It doesn´t matter who came up with the initial idea, we work it together until the end of the process; writing, producing, recording, mixing, etc.
We strongly believe in the “do it yourself” way of thinking, so we try to do all we can at our home studio. We hate spending large amounts of money in studio hours, we prefer to invest in more equipment, more instruments, more tools of mass construction. We never stop working on the band.
Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
Radio Interstellar, a very good band from La Plata, Argentina. We are waiting for their first album to be released. You can listen to a few tunes at their bandcamp: http://radiointerstellar.bandcamp.com
Q: Which bands you´d love to make a cover version?
Spirit Ya! We love his songs… So simple and so beautiful. He is our personal shaman.
Q: What´s the plans for future....
New album for 2014, and an international tour for 2015.
Q: Any parting words?
Join the revolution. Listen to the sounds of love.
