El Lado Amable de las Cosas with Porno - An Interview

***** Interview with Porno *****

Q. When did Porno begin? Tell us about the history...
Well, it began as my personal project, I was studying music in university and got tired of the "academic" side of it. So I wanted to make a lo-fi album of short and simple songs i wrote very quickly. The idea was to make songs out of the first ideas i got. The self titled EP was recorded almost by myself at home with a little help from friends who knew nothing about making music at the time, the idea was to keep it as honest and simple as posible. The band started as trio with me and my two best friends who barely knew how to play their instruments and later some more friends joined the band and we started to work on our own sound. I think the main goal was to make good songs anyone can play, like or be related to.

The name Porno.(with the dot at the end) comes out of a book by Irvine Welsh.

Q: Who are your influences?
The main influences are indie pop or noise pop bands such as Beat Happening, The Velvet Underground, Koala Precipicio, The Vaselines, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Él Mató a un Policía Motorizado, Los Subterráneos, Carolina Durante, 107 Faunos, Los Planetas, etc.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
1.- Psychocandy by The Jesus and Mary Chain
2.- Siempre Alguien Algo by Los Subterráneos
3.- Un Millón de Euros by Él Mató a un Policía Motorizado
4.- Loveless by My Bloody Valentine
5.- The Velvet Underground by The Velvet Underground.

There are tons of albums I would like to list, but those are the first that come to my mind.

Q. How do you feel playing live?
It has to be fun, at least for us it is. I believe sometimes it's kinda weird for the crowd because our songs are slow and noisy and they can't dance to our music; but it feels great when they sing along or just sit down and watch us play.

Q. How do you describe Porno´s sounds?
We like to refer to our sound as Pop Sucio, which is basically our name for noise-pop. Simple indie pop songs played the dirtiest way we can.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
Everything is recorded at home. I run a small independent label called Pop Sucio Records at my house, and we try to get the most honest sounds with the gear we have at home.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
Koala Precipicio. It is a band from our label, i think it may be hard to get at first, but the songs are amazingly well written and i simply love it.

Los Subterráneos. A band from Argentina which is also one of my favorite bands, i think their songwriting is great.

Carolina Durante. A new band from Spain, those guys are getting huge and I believe we will all know them in a couple of months.

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
I'd love to play something by Los Subterráneos or 107 Faunos live. Also it would be fun to do a spanish version of something by My Bloody Valentine or The Velvet Underground.

Q: What are your plans for the future?
For now we will focus on releasing and touring with our new album. It will be called "El Lado Amable de las Cosas" and will be out by the end of this month if everything comes out as we expect it.

Q: Any parting words?
Thanks for listening to our music, and thanks for listening to music in general. We are people who just love listening to music, collecting records or going to shows; and it feels great to be a part of it.
