Until the Quiet Comes with Cankun - An Interview

***** Interview with Cankun *****

Q. When did Cankun started, tell us about the history...
Cankun started in 2010. At this time I had released a lot of stuff with my past monikers "V", The Pistil Cosmos, and Archers by the Sea. I wanted to go to more rythmic songs. Sent a bunch of tracks to Not Not Fun and we decided to change the name for this new project.

Q: Who are your influences?
Lots of different bands...Hood, Talk Talk, PanAmerican/Labradford, Tortoise, Jim O'Rourke, most of the Kranky bands, most of the Jewelled Antler Collective bands, most of the Loren Chasse records, most of the Chicago Underground records, John Zorn, nature, love, family.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
Too hard, but the current one
Talk Talk - Laughing Stock
Hood - The cycle of days and seasons
Stars of the Lid - Avec Laudenum
Flying Lotus - Until the Quiet comes
Aphex Twin - Richard D James album

Q. How do you feel playing live?
I don't feel really comfortable. That's not something I'm looking for. I like to play live, i've spent some really good moments playing in some incredible places and met great people. But musically speaking I've never managed to do the live set I would like to. It's pretty hard to play alone onstage.

Q. How do you describe Cankun sounds?
Dark matter in a dark hole

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
Most of the songs starts with a beat or a rythm. Then I try to find the best possible melody / construction for the song. That second part is the most difficult/long.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended
Flying Lotus but it's not new

Q: Which bands would you love to make a cover version of?
I don't really like covers or remixes so...

Q: What´s the plan for the future....
I have no idea yet. I've just started to record some new stuff, but nothing is settled so far. I would like to release something new by the end of the year, but I don't think it would be possible.

The Last Broadcast with Hospital - An Interview

***** Interview with Hospital *****

Q. When did Hospital started, tell us about the history...
I think we started playing something in 2012 as a band. I mean we know each other for years. Actually we met in school in the far east of russia in town called Komsomolsk-on-Amure (use google). Then, after finished studying in Universatys we removed to Moscow and played in several bands for a while witch was good expirience for us but at the same time it was really messy so we decided to unite and make one good band despite two bad bands. We also asked our friend from Dimitrovgrad (another small russian town) Vova to play with us on drums. That's it.

Q: Who are your influences?
Well...a lot, you know. It's something from our childhood - like the beatles and the doors and niravana. But it's not really reflected in music. But we are also big fans of the cure, tears for fears, madchester wave, jeff buckley, radiohead, coldplay, some mainstream stuff.

Q. Make a list of 5 albuns of all time…
the beatles - revolver,
the doors - strange days,
the cure - wish,
radiohead - ok computer,
doves - the last broadcast.

But lists like this it's changing twice a month actually.)

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Like being totally spaced out

Q. How do you describe Hospital sounds?
Uplifting and sad at the same time. Powerful. Colourful. Light.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
I usually writing all the lyrics and melodies and then we playing live in our rehearsing room for some time to find the right way for every song. Nothing special. But when i writing something i usually watching a movies.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
Parks, Squares and Alleys, Sea Radio, - they are our friends and just released new albums. It's pretty solid.

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
The last tim i thought about cover version it was this band Morning Runner and the song is Burning Benches. I'd love to play Spitting Fire by The Boxer Rebellion too.

Q: What´s the plans for future....
Trying to survive as a band and make another record

Q: Any parting words?
Be patient, follow your dreams and don't give up!

Blank Theory with Basic Nature - An Interview

Recomendado.
***** Interview with Basic Nature *****

Q. When did Basic Nature started, tell us about the history...
Basic Nature started in January of 2014 and our first show was on Valentines Day. We had started a band with two other friends but felt that we connected more as a duo so we decided to do our own thing.

Q: Who are your influences?
For the album "Circles & Lines" there were definitely some influence from Slowdive here and there. Otherwise there were influences from close friends and weird times.

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Playing music for an audience is great, there is an exchange of energy unlike anything else. Sharing what you do with others can be scary and exhilarating.

Q. How do you describe Basic Nature sounds?
We have been described as neo-shoegazey dream pop, or prairie-gazers

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
We recorded with Mortfell Records in Winnipeg. It was a pretty easy going process, Riley (who recorded us) knew exactly what we wanted our songs to sound like so that made it a lot easier. It was overall a great experience.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
Alvvays, they are a great band out of Prince-Edward Island/Toronto, Canada that is blowing people away with their summery tunes.

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
Savage Garden haha

Q: What´s the plans for future....
We are getting ready for our first tour and are continuing to write and record and will hopefully do that through the rest of our time on earth

Q: Any parting words?
Thank you for getting in touch with us. We would love to tour in Brazil in the future!!

Dusk Dance with Eyes Behind The Veil - An Interview

Besides é o debute do projeto solo de Michael Tenzer do Savage Sister e Dream Bear, Eyes Behind The Veil.

Magistral.

***** Interview with Eyes Behind The Veil *****

Q. When did Eyes Behind The Veil started, tell us about the history...
Eyes Behind the Veil began last month (April 2015) as a solo side project. Primarily, I am the guitarist and producer for the band, Savage Sister, but I've always had a yearning to do something that is purely ambient. Something that is about mood but also closely attached to emotional intimacy. Of course, particularly with ambient that's far more just a conceptual hope to project on the listener. Some Savage Sister songs are smaller attempts at that idea of ambient that interested me. Eyes Behind the Veil allows me to explore that sound with total freedom.

Q: Who are your influences?
My top influences are Grouper, White Poppy, Benoit Pioulard, Lovesliescrushing and Brian Eno. Grouper, White Poppy and Benoit have this affinity for turning lo-fi recorded sounds into beautiful collages and that really has effected me. Brian Eno was an influence from the outset of my music tastes, back when I was like 17 years old. I've taken his "studio as an instrument" philosophy to heart and the sounds/textures he has created definitely influence my style. Lovesliescrushing was a deep love of mine in late high school to early college. Scott Cortez just has this insane knack for melding all sorts of sounds, especially guitar, into a kind of sonic soup that is always gorgeous and yearning. Cocteau Twins, Slowdive and This Mortal Coil also have an influence as well!

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
That's tough...I'll do this according to my ambient tastes!

1. Sleep Over - Forever
2. Grouper - The Man Who Died in His Boat
3. White Poppy - Drifter's Gold
4. Cocteau Twins - The Moon and Melodies
5. Lovesliescrushing - Glissecule

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Good question! I have yet to take this project into a live setting since it is still new, but I plan to try it out soon when I've worked out how I'd like to do it. I got a loop pedal recently...wish me luck!

Q. How do you describe Eyes Behind The Veil sounds?
I'm trying to capture a kind of ethereal emotional intimacy and a purity of romantic spirit with this project. A lot of ambient is more focused on the drone aspect, putting the listener into a hypnotic state, but for me I like there to be a balance between repetition and progression. I like the calm and fortitude that repetition brings, but I like to push into new spaces within songs to give a sense of movement and satisfaction. I think that's probably where my shoegaze sensibility comes in - I'm not just looking to make noise, I want to make beautiful noise.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
I do everything from my home "studio", which is really just my computer and monitors. I use a Line 6 UX2 audio interface and Line 6 Podfarm for all of my guitar effects and vocal. All the sounds in that program are modeled after existing pedals, some classic, some vintage - so it's real nice to have that at the touch of your fingertips. I tend to use a lot of chorus, delay and reverb. Then I put it all through Sonar and apply a number of effects in post, like distortion, delay and reverb, to give it an extra degraded, detuned quality. I like to get that kind of lo-fi analog feel without having to scrounge for equipment and complicate the process beyond what I'm interested in investigating. For synths I use Native Instruments FM8 and typically give those same effects treatments as my guitar.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended
There's so much great stuff out there, I recently found some good stuff: Latarnie Montpellier (ambient), Orchid Mantis (experimental/dream pop/ambient), FOREVR (shoegaze), Hush Pup (dream pop)

Q: Which bands would you love to make a cover version of?
Hah, with a project like this, it would be hard to do a cover...but maybe I could figure something out. Song to the Siren, perhaps?

Q: What´s the plan for the future....
Just figuring out how to do the live thing with this project, it's all new and foreign to me at this point. I think I'll just be focusing on that for the foreseeable future. I may attempt to do a run of cassettes for my album, Besides. We'll see.

Q: Any parting words?
Thanks so much for asking to interview me about Eyes Behind the Veil! I love TBTCI and have really enjoyed the compilations that you've put out!

In Rainbows with Neighbour - An Interview

O futuro aguarda o Neighbour.

***** Interview with Neighbour *****

Q. When did Neighbour started, tell us about the history...
Me (Martin) and Adam were in a band together and started writing some songs on the side, that band split up and we recorded a couple of songs, they got picked up on a couple of blogs / magazines and we started getting gig offers before we had a band, so in came Josh who we had both been in bands with for years and we couldn't find a girl bass player so we chose Chris as he had nice hair and a thin physique.

Q: Who are your influences?
The Dandy Warhols, Spiritualized, Mew, Pavement, My Bloody Valentine, The Cure, Blur, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, Elliot Smith, Pixies, Nirvana, Ride, Sonic Youth, David Bowie, The Stone Roses, The Beatles, Ringo Deathstarr, Pink Floyd, Syd Barrett, BJM, Oasis, GOAT, Spacemen 3, TOY.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
This is a tough one as none of us could find 5 albums we all agree on, but 5 albums we go always go back to when we can't find something to put on are....

Dandy Warhols - The Dandy Warhols, Come Down
Spiritualized - Ladies and Gentlemen, We are Floating in Space
David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Radiohead - In Rainbows

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Theres nothing better, playing live is what you are judged on, theres nothing worse than when you like a record and you go and see that band playing live and they cant pull it off, so for us thats the live shows are what we are all about.

Q. How do you describe Neighbour sounds?
British Pop

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
All our tunes are home recordings , we've slowly built up our own studio where one of us will put down and idea and we will work on it together and add our own parts.

We're not the most technically gifted with recording but we know what sound we want!

Q. Which new bands do you recommended
We've been listening the new records from Childhood. GOAT & JAWS

Q: Which bands would you love to make a cover version of?
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody (but really badly played)

Q: What´s the plan for the future....
We're recording at the moment and looking to have a single release this year, so watch this space

Q: Any parting words?
Live long and prosper xxx

Remain in Light with Mute Swan - An Interview

***** Interview with Mute Swan *****

Q. When did Mute Swan started, tell us about the history...
Mute Swan started in the Spring of 2013. We were playing together before MS, sharing members between two bands: Mombasa and Peaks. The line-up was kind of an experiment but we all had very similar music taste. We started with cover songs (The Black Angels, Maserati, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Black Moth Super Rainbow) to see how we played together, then spent a year writing material before our first show, opening for Pink Mountaintops on May 7th, 2014.

Q: Who are your influences?
For non-musical influences we like 90's television, sci-fi, optical illusions, hallucinations, mirages, dreams, visions, meditation, spirituality, nature... we've learned a lot from My Bloody Valentine, Animal Collective, Tortoise, Beck, Neu!, Cocteau Twins, The Talking Heads, Boards of Canada, Stereolab, The Sea and Cake, Deer Hunter, Cave, Tame Impala, lots of psyche, shoegaze and post-rock.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
Top 5 albums right now would have to be:
Loveless by MBV,
Heaven or Las Vegas by Cocteau Twins,
One Bedroom by the Sea and Cake,
Remain in Light by the Talking Heads,
and Meddle by Pink Floyd.

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Playing live is fun. We're definitely more comfortable at home writing songs and making weird noises together. But we always try to make it an experience for the audience with immersive visuals, etc.

Q. How do you describe Mute Swan sounds?
It's always hard to describe ourselves to other people! Maybe because we've spent so much time with the songs? To us it's really a process of putting this chord here and that melody there with this rhythm driving through and if it all feels good we'll keep it. But here are some words we might pin to ourselves: dreamy, hypnotic, psychedelic, romantic, energetic, optimistic, dense, melodic, modern...

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
Mike (Barnett) recorded and mixed everything in his bedroom with the exception of the drums (recorded at Waterworks Studio). He tracked everything separately; guitars first, then bass, vocals and drums. A lot of time was spent getting the guitars to sound right with effects, etc. But even more time went into mixing everything. Mixing is hard! And it was all done in the middle of summer in Tucson with no air conditioning!

Q. Which new bands do you recommended
A few new bands we're into right now are Connan Mockasin, Wand, Them Are Us Too, Moon Diagrams, and Stephen Steinbrink.

Q: What´s the plan for the future....
Our plan right now is to continue recording the next album, make a couple music videos and go on tour. Although, the long-term goal is always to make better and better music.

Q: Any parting words?
Thanks for the interview! But also, we'd like to say one more thing, and we hope it doesn't offend any other bands who should totally be reaping the fruits of their labor. We feel like there have been too many bands coming out who take their style "note for note" from previous decades at the expense of pushing their music and music in general into the future. Are they clinging to these previous innovators because it's easy? Or because it sells? Or because they actually believe you can't top the oldies? Is Rock & Roll really dead? We hope not. We love the early innovators but the search for new inner experience goes on. Isn't that the whole point? We want something new! And if we can't find it, we'll try to make it.

Silver Rocket with Darklands - An Interview

***** Interview with Darklands *****

Q. When did Darklands start, tell us about the history...
Jeff and I had played before in a band called Masthead for a while. When it dissolved, I took a job that paid very well and would've provided me a multitude of benefits, yet it would've robbed me of years my free time. I quickly realized I'd rather endure years of financial instability to do the one thing I've ever actually enjoyed for as long as I can than anything else.

I had never been the sole song writer, singer or guitar player in any project I had ever been involved in, which lead to a lot of second guessing of my goals by myself and other people. The realization that expression will always be more valuable than any amount of technical prowess kept me going. Jeff and David's (and a few other good friends') abilities and patience gave me the means. Spite towards anyone who would doubt what me and this band want to accomplish gave me focus.

Q: Who are your influences?
I think each of us grew up with American independent hardcore punk, which showed us the value of personal expression on individual terms. I could've ended up a ditch digger with an opiate addiction had being in a band not been so appealing to my younger self.

In terms of song writing, I'll speak for myself and say-

Musically: Billy Corgan, Stephen Malkmus, Bernard Sumner/Peter Hook, Kevin Shields, Jim/William Reid, Mick Jones, Neil Young, and Thurston Moore/Lee Ronaldo.

Lyrically: Pat Kindlon, Gibby Miller, Wes Eisold, Ian Curtis, Joe Strummer, George Hirsch, and Mark Palm.

Probably lots more, those are the first that come to mind.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
Siamese Dream- Smashing Pumpkins
OK Computer- Radiohead
Crooked Rain- Pavement
Daydream Nation- Sonic Youth
Doolittle- Pixies

All of these continue to reward me with every listen. There are some songs on Siamese Dream I've literally heard hundreds of times that I've yet to grow sick of. Each a creative benchmark made by people of all levels of proficiency that I'm always left wanting to steal from.

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Used to intimidate me a into bad performances on the regular. Lacked a lot of confidence which affected my voice, timing, etc. Now I'm considerably more content with my abilities, despite always wanting more out myself, so shows have been a lot more fun.

Q. How do you describe Darklands' sound?
To me, we sound like what happens when people who were born in the mid to late 80s start to outgrow the baggage that came with Hardcore Punk. That said, this is the only kid of band I've ever wanted to be in, even during the throes of my angry teenage years.

I guess sonically that translates to 90s aesthetics as played by inept punks.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs.
This new tape coming out was recorded by our good friend Trevor Vaghaun (The Rival Mob, Soul Control, Barnswallow, Sweet Jesus, a million others..He's the Steve Albini of Southern New England). Unlike the last EP we did, this will be a lot closer to how we sound in a live setting, which is what we wanted for these songs. Most of them were written over the past few months, which felt like one extended personal nightmare, so the more intimate the better.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
Good friends of ours: Twin Foxes, Black Beach, Tape Eater, Bloodpheasant, Kiss Concert, Burglary Years, Barnswallow, Saccharine.

More recognizable: Nothing, California X, Supercrush, Drug Church, Self Defense Family

Q: Which band would you love to cover?
This comes up fairly often, lack of talent on my end limits our options a bit. We've done an entire New Order set which was a lot of fun. I like when bands do covers that they can really contort to their own style. Maybe a Depeche Mode or Echo and the Bunnymen song in the future.

Q: What´s the plan for the future....
Planning a short, East Coast US tour for September/October with a few friends. We're aiming to play a few dates in Mexico next February/March if all goes to plan.

Q: Any parting words?
Thank you very much for taking an interest in us, hopefully I was able to provide what you were looking for. See you soon.

Wardance with Then Comes Silence - An Interview

Photo by Jonas Fransson and Kalle Christiansson

***** Interview with Alex Svenson from Then Comes Silence *****

Photo by Jonas Fransson and Kalle Christiansson

Q. When did Then Comes Silence started, tell us about the history...
I started Then Comes Silence in 2012 after finishing the first demo that I had worked on for a year. Everything was quite busy in the beginning. The label Novoton signed the deal and I asked some of the best to form the band with me. The first show was in October 2012 in our hometown Stockholm where we opened for A Place To Bury Strangers. At that time we had only five songs that worked fine live, so it was a very short gig of course.

We did a turn around the south of Sweden and Denmark. The Roskilde Festival invited Then Comes Silence to play in 2013. Unfortunately some of the members left the band, so I rebooted Then Comes Silence with a new excellent crew, Karl and Jens. We started preparing for the next album and Roskilde. We’ve been the same team from then on.

Q: Who are your influences?
I grew up absorbing all kind of music, but some bands and gods stayed forever.

Dead Kennedys, Ramones, Killing Joke, The Doors, Magazine, Pixies, The Runaways, The Stooges and The Jimi Hendrix Experience.

My bass player influences are almost all women except for Cliff Williams in AC/DC. They are very good at what they are doing and keep it simple. For example, the brilliant Kim Deal, fuzz queen Debbie Googe and noise conquistador Kim Gordon. No showing off or gooey swank.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
This list might look different tomorrow, but here you are.

Top 5 ever:
Paranoid by Black Sabbath
Switched-On-Bach by Wendy Carlos
Loveless by My Bloody Valentine
And Don’t The Kids Just Love It by Television Personalities
The Doors by The Doors

Q. How do you feel playing live?
I’ve played live for a long time. I’ve been in many bands, some are totally forgotten and others had some small success.

It’s with joy and energy I take the stage. No matter the size of the venue.

And it’s also the only time I get some exercise. I usually hate sports and workout.

Q. How do you describe Then Comes Silence sounds?
Some like to tag the music as post-punk, goth and coldwave. Well, that’s OK with me. It seems you need at least three tags on a band to work around it. In the beginning we played it loud constantly, the word “dynamic” didn’t have any value. And if you listen to the first album you notice that the sound is gritty and mixed with skew frequencies. That’s the point. It creates a sense of insecurity and unbalance. It’s the sound of the apocalypse. The new album “Nyctophilian” has got a nice punch instead. We stripped a couple of layers.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
I’m the engineer and we record it in our own place. We do it all by ourselves. It’s not an economical issue or pride. This is strictly how it should sound like. I don’t like long recording sessions, so we always work quite fast in the studio. Maybe one day we will consider asking for someone else’s opinion and advice, but for now we have a clear and strong idea of the music and the sound.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended
The British newcomers Spectres, Prayers from the US, the Danish hard working band The Foreign Resort and Hemgraven from the north of Sweden.

Q: Which bands would you love to make a cover version of?
Well, hard to say. I don’t know. I need some more time to think .

Photo by Jonas Fransson and Kalle Christiansson
Q: What´s the plan for the future....
The plans for the band are gradually taking form. There’s not a big machine behind us pulling the strings. Well, at least not yet. We’re playing here and there, mostly Germany, Sweden and Denmark. Our label, Novoton, puts out the music and we follow up where it’s starting to grow. A basic do it yourself strategy. We will go back to Germany again for sure. This year we have plans to introduce the music to the UK and Spain.

Q: Any parting words?
Make sure you do what you want to do. Eventually it might be so cool and good that others will follow.

Coming Down / Leaving Up with Justine Never Knew The Rules - Track by Track

Track by Track por Maurício Barros - JNKTR

Coming Down
Músicas na linha de “When You Least Expect It”. Nessa época estava ouvindo bastante Fleeting Joys, Astrobrite e My Bloody Valentine (claro!). Em relação a letra: Um dia estava numa festa e tocou Coming Down do Primal Scream. Dai um amigo me perguntou se eu sabia o que a gíria inglesa “come down” significava.

Leaving Up
A Leaving Up é isso. Coming down ao contrário. Inclusive o nome é uma alusão ao nome do single (“Leaving” = antônimo de “Coming” e “Up” = antônimo de “Down”).

Savor with Creation Myth - An Interview

Bauhaus Party with Dark Narrows - An Interview

***** Interview with Dark Narrows *****

Q. When did Dark Narrows start, tell us about the history...
Dan O.: vocals, guitar, keyboards
Dan R.,: Bass, guitar
Paul M: Drums

Dan O and Dan R were working on solo projects and wanted to collaborate on an album. After the first few songs the music sort of took on a life of its own and we've been playing for about a year and a half now. We met Paul this Summer around the time of the Baltimore riots.

Q: Who are your influences?
A: We were influenced by wide range of bands and artists. We are big fans of David Bowie, Brian Eno, Spacemen 3, Leonard Cohen, Robert Smith, Johnny Marr, Robin Guthrie, & Simon Raymond.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
A: The Warlocks, Surgery
The Cure, Seventeen Seconds
Cocteau Twins, Treasure Album
Lou Reed, Transformer
Leonard Cohen, Death of a Ladies Man

Q. How do you feel playing live?
A: It's a good feeling. There's not much that can compare.

Q. How do you describe Dark Narrows sounds?
A: We have mixed genres (Newwave, Psychgaze, 80's Goth, and Avant-garde). We like to experiment with dissonance and offset stereo delay effects. It's a real process to nail-down something unique. We are always learning and perfecting our craft. We designed and built some of our analog guitar and vocal effects. We are big fans of Fender and Danelectro guitars and basses.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
A: We are entirely self produced. We wrote the framework of the songs first over a period of five months from August to December 2014. Then we recorded everything in about 20 hours in our home studio. We mixed one song at a time. It must have taken us about three months to mix and master the album. We laid down drum tracks first then bass and guitar. Keyboards and other effects were added later during mixing. We write and record vocals after the rest of the song is fully mixed and recorded.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended
A: So many good bands are out right now... Lights That Change, The Morelings, The Sleepover Disaster, We hear that TBTCI knows of a few good bands ;)

Q: Which bands would you love to make a cover version of?
A: The Cars, Psychedelic Furs, Sisters of Mercy, and maybe a song from early period of The Cure.

Q: What´s the plan for the future....
A: We are writing songs for our second album. We plan to record them this summer and release our second album in the fall. Until then we will do a few gigs in Baltimore/Washington area and finish the music video for one of the song off our self-titled debut album.

Q: Any parting words?
A: 1) We heard that Brazil has pink river dolphins. Is this true?
And...
2) Thank you for the support and we appreciate all the listeners in Brazil and the rest of South America, Thank you all!!

In a Hole with Sun Mahshene - An Interview

***** Interview with Sun Mahshene *****

Q. When did Sun Mahshene start, tell us about the history...
I started the project just over a year ago. It was born out of the frustration of being in bands which were run as “democracies”. I’ve always had a clear vision of what I want in a song and where to take it and with the band democracy thing it has been largely counterproductive as too many opinions tend to ruin an idea leading to frustration and very little output. Or as a friend of mine put it, too many chefs spoiling the broth. So I decided to go my own way with things. I wanted to create something which could be dynamic and exciting but with a clear vision and direction. It’s been a great way to meet cool people and work with a lot of like-minded musicians. I’ve also brought some close friends on board who are helping to make this a great live experience. The most recent collaboration was with Francois Sky and Gary Hughes & Laura O’Brien from Rise of the Echo Drone/Helicon. We’re working on a collaboration ep call Sun, Sky and Echoes. It’s a 3 part ep with the first song ‘For Tomorrow’ available to listen to on Youtube. Earlier in the year we released an ep called Coming Home to You which features a collaboration with Lydia Des Dolles from DAAG HUR. That was a lot of fun to record. Maybe I’m being biased but it sounds great.

Q: Who are your influences?
Being a teenager during the nineties the Britpop explosion was probably the most influential scene in shaping my musical interests. So my biggest influences would be Oasis, The Verve, Pulp, Blur, The Stone Roses, Kula Shaker, Radiohead, Ride, Happy Mondays, The Charlatans, Primal Scream and many many more. Although some of the bands mentioned were out slightly before this era. But they all ended up being intertwined during the mid-nineties. What a great time eh? Post Britpop, it was BRMC who opened my eyes to this other side of rock n roll which I hadn’t been exposed to. But once I was I grabbed it with both hands. It was through them I discovered bands like Asteroid #4, A Place to Bury Strangers and The Jesus and Mary Chain. A friend of mine at the time recommended I watch the documentary Dig. Needless to say my mind was blown after watching it. The Brian Jonestown Massacre were probably one of the biggest revelations for me. There are many other influences but the bands mentioned give you an overall picture of what floats my boat.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
That’s a tough question as there are so many I love but if I have to choose…

1. Definitely Maybe – Oasis
2. The Stone Roses – The Stone Roses
3. The La’s – The La’s
4. These Flowers are Ours – The Asteroid #4
5. Heartworm – Whipping Boy

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Playing live is every bands bread and butter and it’s something we live for. I’ve played with the guys that are there now in various other bands over the years so we know each other well and we vibe off each other. Sun Mahshene hasn’t gigged as of yet but rehearsals are due to start later this month with a view of running our first few gigs later this year to give people a taste of what we’re about.

Q. How would you describe Sun Mahshene’s sound?
This is a tough question. I would say that if you were to take Oasis, The Jesus and Mary Chain, A Place to Bury Strangers, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and elements of Shoegaze and mix them all together you would get our sound. It’s quite a mix.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording your songs?
I have a small recording studio set up so most things come out of jamming ideas. It’s all about the music first and the vocals and lyrics come afterwards. Whatever is captured in the initial recordings we listen back to and then try and fine tune the structures. Once this is done, vocal melodies and lyrics are worked on and then layered on the song afterwards.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
New bands I would recommend checking out are:
This Other Kingdom: https://www.facebook.com/pages/This-Other-Kingdom/123658440997718 Late City Edition: https://www.facebook.com/LateCityEdition
The Subterranean Satellite Band: https://www.facebook.com/thesubterraneansatelliteband

Q: Which band would you love to do a cover version of?
Hmmm, that’s a good question. I’m not really a fan of doing covers but if we were to do one I guess it would be something by The Jesus and Mary Chain.

Q: What are the plans for future....
Right now we are demoing songs for an album which we hope to record early next year and release closer to the summer of 2016. For the more immediate future we are putting together a live show to begin gigging later this year.

Q: Any parting words?
I’d like to say a big thank you to all who have supported us so far and who have listened too and downloaded our music. It’s hugely appreciated!

Free Noise with Spring Decade - An Interview

***** Interview with Spring Decade *****

Q. When did Spring Decade started, tell us about the history...
It all started back in 2011 but Paolo and I were long time friends. We decided to play together and well, magic happened. We started writing and then we recorded out first ep Images which we decided to “release” for free on our social pages. We started playing live and writing new songs. Until now we released two eps of songs, two eps of experimental improvisational music and one tribute to The Fugs.

Q: Who are your influences?
Well, it's kinda hard and boring to list all our influences, surely we are big Sonic Youth fans and we worship The Velvet Underground. We are also fan of electronic and industrial stuff, bands like Throbbing Gristle and Einsturzende Nuebauten are really a huge inspiration for our sound. But we like also a lot of different stuff, from shoegaze - My Bloody Valentine, Lilys, etc. - to hip hop. We are both big De La Soul fan.

Q. Make a list of 5 albuns of all time…
Well, that's a very difficult question. Ok, let's try:
1. The Velvet Underground – The Velvet Underground & Nico
2. Bob Dylan – Highway 61 Revisited
3. De La Soul – 3 Feet High & Risin'
4. Ramones – Ramones
5. Neu! - Neu!

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Well, it's exciting... most of the times. It depends of the venue and the audience and how do you feel but most of the times we really like to play live. Noise rock music is at its peek when played live and loud, very loud.

Q. How do you describe Spring Decade sounds?
Noisy. Very noisy. And psychedelic. That's the short way to describe us. And schizophrenic. At least that's how I will describe our sound.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
Most of the times it starts with me playing guitar. When I find some chords or a riff which I think it's worth of workin on it, I send everything to Paolo and we start working together. Sometimes it's just a riff and so the work it's more collaborative, sometimes what I provide is more complete so it's just a matter of details. We record everything in a garage at Paolo's house. It's very diy and lo-fi. Very very very lo-fi.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
I'm a lot into Courtney Barnett, she's sooo talented, I mean no one writes lyrics like her, she's a poet! And Hop Along. I just listened to two of their songs and I was blown away

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
Mmm I don't know, actually some time ago there was the idea of a covers ep and in the tracklist there was definitely Human Fly by The Cramps and... I forgot all the rest. So let's stick to The Cramps. They're perfect, easy to play, sexy, crazy. They've got everything we like in music.

Q: What´s the plans for future....
The conquer of the world?
Record new music? Nothing at all? Actually we are working on a new ep, it will be a lot different from our previous stuff, more dark and industrial.

Q: Any parting words?
Like “May the force be with you”? “May the force be with you” and don't forget to visit our social pages, we are very kind and nice people so come along and say hello.

Louder than Bombs with You Only Live Forever - An Interview

Grande EP.

***** Interview with You Only Live Forever *****

Q. When did You Only Live Forever start? Tell us about the history...
Kevin: You Only Live Forever started as a recording project between Julie and me. We had both played in several bands in the bay area, and the band served as means for us to express some of the musical ideas we had at the time. Our first collaboration was the song “Desert Rose”, and once we put that song together we began a period of writing the rest of the No Control EP. After we started the recording process, we decided to start working with other musicians to create a band that could perform live as well.

Julie: Funny story is… Kevin and I met at an audition for his previous band. Though we ended up working in different bands for a period of time, we eventually decided to write our first song together which resulted in “Desert Rose.” After that song, we realized we had created the sound of our first EP.

Q: Who are your influences?
Kevin: During the time we were writing and recording the No Control EP I was listening to a lot of electro/alternative groups like Ladytron, The Naked and Famous, MGMT, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and The Faint. I was also listening to a lot of 80’s music like New Order and The Cars, which I think you can hear on these songs.

Julie: Prior to forming You Only Live Forever, I was heavily influenced by alternative rock/grunge bands from the 90’ s like The Smiths, The Cure, Smashing Pumpkins, The Sundays, Radiohead, Nirvana, etc. When I met Kevin, we discovered that we shared similar influences. At that time I was writing a lot of more French folk/dream pop kind of songs. Kevin inspired me to kind of push the boundaries of my musical comfort zone to do something more modern and electro.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
Julie: Kevin does not have an album of all time, but these are the top 5 Period Albums of my life. They are all characterized by strong musicianship, colorful lyrics, interesting themes/moods/imagery and a quiet soulfulness.
1. The Smiths “Louder than Bombs”
2. The Cure “Disintegration”
3. Radiohead “The Bends”
4. Kings of Convenience “Quiet is the New Loud”
5. The Beatles, it’s a tie between “Help” and “Rubber Soul”

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Kevin: I think playing live adds something to the experience that a lot of people enjoy. There’s something about being at a live performance where you know that anything can go wrong at any given moment. It’s kind of like sitting at the edge of your seat. There’s also an experience you get from hearing the music live that is quite different than listening to the record. It’s interesting to hear how the songs translate into a live setting.

Q. How do you describe You Only Live Forever’s sound?
Julie: Throughout the whole writing/recording process, it was really important to us to create music that was not only upbeat and pleasing to listen to, but also artistic with a sense of depth and a soulful quality to it.

Kevin: On our first record we utilized a lot of heavy guitars and bass. I was trying to create a sound that captured the excitement of heavier rock bands along with electronic elements, and a listenable quality that retained some emotion and memorable parts. On the new songs we’ve been writing, I wanted to bring out more bright and clean sounds like the classic piano and clean guitar, while the other new songs have a more dreamy electronic sound. It will be interesting to see how they all come together on our next record.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs?
Kevin: The recording process is our favorite part. Julie and I usually start by recording a couple of demo versions of the songs at home, and once we’re happy with it we take it to the studio.

Julie: Initially, we went through a few different recording studios but were never happy with the sound. It wasn’t until BZ Lewis got involved with the project that our sound began to emerge. BZ is a six time Emmy Award winning engineer. He mixed most of the No Control EP.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
Julie: There are a few local San Jose bands that we appreciate: The Trims, Silent Pictures and Claire on a Dare.

Q: Which band would you love to make a cover version of?
Kevin: For our live set we’ve covered “Heads Will Roll” by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. In the future I’d like to possibly cover a song that will highlight some of our male/female dynamic.

Julie: I think it would be interesting to cover something quiet or acoustic and introduce an electronic sound to it. We might try covering a Beatles song and play on the vocal harmonies or maybe something with dark and pretty elements from the Cure.

Q: What´s the plans for future....
Kevin: For our next recording I’d like for us to explore some new territory. I want us to continue to grow as artists. I think the No Control EP came out pretty heavy, so we’ve been experimenting with different sounds and more electronic elements on the new songs. I think our next recording will show a shift as we continue to develop.

Julie: We are looking forward to finishing our next release, and our hope is to be invited to play at Live 105 BFD. We are also planning to create our first music video later this year. Stay tuned!

Q: Any parting words?
Julie: This has been a rewarding year for us. We released our first EP, played our first open air festival and gained a lot of support as a band. Our ultimate goal is to continue to create music that will resonate with people and stay with them long after. We hope you enjoy our music. Thanks for listening.

Frosting on a Beater with Divehoney - An Interview

***** Interview with Divehoney *****

Q. When did divehoney started, tell us about the history...
Started out in 2013 in Stockholm/Sweden, first as a side project, then became became more and more of a main project. Divehoney is a one man solo band. At first a sound experiment platform, a place for different moods with simple melodies ... and it turned out pretty well.

Q: Who are your influences?
Influences come from all over. Mainly film and film music. Trent Reznor and NIN is also huge influence in the art of making noise and in the way they build their songs and sounds. Grunge, swedish indie may also have something to do with Divehoney sounds.

Q. Make a list of 5 albuns of all time…
Woow, this is gonna sound weird, but at the top of my mind:

The Posies - Frosting on a beater
Soundgarden - Superunknown
Foo Fighters - 1st
Def Leppard - Pyromania
My Bloodie Valentine - Loveless

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Planning on putting a live act together with some co musicians later this year. Probably a three peice covering bass, guitars, pads and keys. Some back track also. But live should be a little bit different from studio:) So I'll have to get back about that:)

Q. How do you describe divehoney sounds?
Starkly engaging and hauntingly beautiful. Fuzz and delicate vocals with grunge melodies and chords with a dreamy feel.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
Always starts with simple acoustic guitar chords and a vocal idea. Then the song takes a journey in beat, sound and feel. Putting in a lot of experimental time by just doing or using equipment/tools the wrong way or a way they wasn't supposed to. Quite a long process but the result is always far beyond what you imagined the song would be at first.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
Courtney Barnett, Refused & Pale Honey (also cool name ha ha:-)

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
Depeche mode - Walking in my shoes or maybe I feel you (there are some good albums there by the way)

Q: What´s the plans for future....
Getting the three peice together, playing som shows in Sweden and Scandinavia and getting the 1st EP out.

Q: Any parting words?
Working on some new stuff and will let you know when that happens. And, write something of your own reflections on Divehoney:)
