Puzzlephonics I & II with Operator Music Band - An Interview

***** Interview with Operator Music Band *****

Q: Who are your influences?
Our biggest influences are bands that can walk the line between weird and serious, like Devo and Stereolab. We also tend to gravitate towards the minimal and modern.

Q. Make a list of 5 albuns of all time…
-I'll list my 5 albums, but I can't say they represent the rest of the band. I tend to get made fun of for my taste from the others:
-R.E.M. - Reckoning
-Philip Glass - Einstein on the Beach
-Bright Eyes - Digital Ash in a Digital Urn
-The Jesus and Mary Chain - Darklands
-Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks

Q. How do you feel playing live?
-Playing live is one of those things you kind of dread till you are actually doing it and realize that there is no other feeling that compares. At least that's how I feel. It's fun but it can be demanding and sometimes unrewarding.

Q. How do you describe Operator Music Band sounds?
-Operator Music Band's sound has always been described as not too silly and not too serious. It's a lot of bleeps and bloops but also a lot of noise. You can dance to it, but it can maybe make you uncomfortable.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
-We recorded this album in two parts. Each side is an EP. We recorded both in the same studio in Brooklyn called Gravesend Recording but about a year apart. Dara, who plays guitar, synth and sings half of the songs is an audio engineer, so she has a vision for how we are going to capture everything.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
-There are so many talented new bands in Brooklyn (lots of bad ones, too!) that it's hard to choose. Our friends Parlor Walls just released an incredible album that we are very envious of. We also love Decorum and Patio, two other bands from Brooklyn that are doing things very differently.

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
-there is a tradition here (maybe there too) to have a band do a full cover set on Halloween. My dream has always been for us to be New Order.

Q: What are your plans for the future?
-As I write this, we are currently touring for our first record, Puzzlephonics I & II, which came out in early March 2017 on New Professor Music. We will doing a couple dates in the US and then going to take a little break and work on some new material. We, of course, would be open to coming to São Paulo anytime!

Q: Any parting words?
-just want to thank you for listening to our music and for being interested in talking to us. People can purchase our record here: https://newprofessor.bandcamp.com/album/puzzlephonics-i-ii
